Shin Jeong-ah’s lawyer Park Jong-rok said his poor client has been bamboozled:
He also said Shin was in the U.S. to see John Tracy, who was a part-time instructor at Yale University and her personal tutor. She allegedly delegated all her work related to the paper, and feels that Tracy duped her. Shin hired a private eye to look for him, but no contact was made. She also tried to get in touch with her supervisory tutor at the university, but couldn’t reach him.
I knew there was a rational explanation to this all.
UPDATE: Shin and her lawyer claim she passed her thesis defense, Shin saying she did her defense in fall of 2004. The thing is, SNU Professor Jang Jin-seong, who really did graduate from Yale’s art history department, told SBS that Yale doesn’t do thesis defenses.
The Hani also looks at Shin’s lies. Or alleged lies, anyway. It’s not looking good for Shin when the University of Kansas says she dropped out in her third year, while Yale says she was never a student.

This story gets stranger by the minute. Is she simply lying or does she actually believe what she’s claiming is true?
I couldn’t even begin to guess.
By now the chica probably believes she survived Sampoong. Why not some sort of Yale fantasy? She’s a pathological liar.
She “delegated” the writing of her dissertation?
Huh? Who’s zooming whom?
This broad has delusions of grandeur and a will to unearned power & prestige of such elephantine proportions that they exceed even the usual grotesque Korean pretensions.
The lady needs to disappear for a while, at least until she gets her story straight.
I don’t get it. Hasn’t it already been proven that she didn’t even complete her undergraduate degree?
If she was never even registered at Yale, then any defense of hers related to her thesis and her tutor is a mute point, no? Strange.
However, I am willing to help her by posing as John Tracy if she can get me some of that good South Korean government money.
My God! Why did she come back? Some movie producer would have loved to have put her story to script. Think of all it encompasses. And I’m sure someone would play Andie MacDowell to her Gerard Depardieu. She would have to live in infamy but with the jack she’d get she could have at least insulated herself over there. Here, she’s in the midst of the hornets nest. She’ll have more trouble with a tell-all, too.
I don’t get it. She conned so many supposedly intelligent people she should have been able to figure this out. She must have something up her sleeve.
I’ll admit her lies are outrageous. She’s busy looking for tutors when twenty five bucks would probably get her several sets of sealed transcripts she could have mailed to jouralists all over the world. “If I didn’t graduate then why did I buy a graduation gown?” That’s a honey of a melon scratcher.
There must be another bomb she’s going to unload. This story is compelling. Now make this into a movie and promote it like “D-War”, put it on 2,000 screens in the US and I’d get behind it. Have Choi Min Shik play Byeon.
She’s obviously been in Korea too long.
In the article, the real structure is: Ms.Shin talked to lawyer Park, lawyer Park talked to the reporter, and the reporter talks to us on media.
But, in the quoted part above, lawyer Park omits Shin’s statement and he just says what he heard as if he had experienced it. And then later, the hearsay statement of the reporter also disappears and it is said as fact itself.
Prosecution has time limit, but the time limit for prosecution does not proceed if the criminal stays abroad in oder to avoid criminal procedure. It may be one reason for her coming back.
And you know, there are judicial assistance and extradition treaties between Korea and USA. No haven in America.
앗!
She said, “논문 표절을 고졸로 내린 언론한테는 저는 아무 할 말이 없습니다.”
This statement of hers reveals her mindset.
Delegated means cheated and bribed.
Sounds like a typical day in Korea to me. Why is everyone so surprised???
“If I didn’t graduate then why did I buy a graduation gown?” That’s a honey of a melon scratcher.
LOL - she sounds like some older single chick, sans boyfriend, who’s already bought her wedding gown.
Leaving the enrollment issue aside for a moment, for the plagarised material to have made its way into the ‘thesis’ in the manner she claims, Tracy would have had to have been doing more than checking for typos. And, if anyone other than the candidate writes a doctoral thesis, it’s invalidated. So, either she lied to her employers, or she lied to her alma mater and her employers. Bye, 정아씨.
What does this mean, “논문 표절을 고졸로 내린 언론한테는 저는 아무 할 말이 없습니다.”
I can’t figure out this part, “고졸로 내린 언론한테는”
Shin’s words:
“If I didn’t graduate then why did I buy a graduation gown?”
Shin’s Meaning:
“If I didn’t graduate then why did I buy a graduation gown (during my trip to New York recently)?”
“If I didn’t graduate then why did I buy a graduation gown (if not to trick everybody into thinking that I had graduated)?”
“If I didn’t graduate then why did I buy a graduation gown (except that I didn’t buy one, but you can’t prove that, can you)?”
“If I didn’t graduate then why did I buy a graduation gown (unless I’m truly living in a fantasy world)?”

Having actually graduated from the school I went to, I think all graduates can still check out their own GPA and classes taken and degree earned with a simple log in and a password. I’m talking post graduation.
I actually think this is a universal thing available to any self respecting university system post the internet era.
I actually think someone who didn’t graduate can still check their GPA and classes taken on-line. Although I don’t fit that picture, so I wouldn’t know for sure.
Ms. Shin never had to leave Korea to check it out at Yale.
Poor Ms. Shin.
Write that book, cash in, and get your once in a life time of a In Saeng Ban Jun.
Take all those perverts down with you, who were hiding for 2 good months while you had to make up incredible tall tales that don’t even make sense to anyone.
Deny everything. Concede nothing. Talk of conspiracies. Insist on your victimhood.
She’s got 5000 years of training in this defence.
Oh, sorry for my mistake.
She said, “논문 표절을 고졸학력으로 내린 언론한테 저는 아무 할 말이 없습니다.”
Ms.Shin seemed to have tried to say:
she actually got doctor’s degree in spite of her PLAGIARISM-though I doubt if she understands what plagiarism is and I think what she really wanted to say is that she ANYWAY SUBMITTED her thesis made up by someone other than her and got the doctor’s degree from Yale ;
but the media DOWNGRADED(내린) her into a high school graduate.
You can watch her statement in the middle of http://news.kbs.co.kr/article/.....26787.html .
Good, gbnhj
I think the same of you.
Why does she keep on lying when just about everyone can see thru those lies?
A salary of 70 ~ 80 million Won, hmmm….. it’s not a bad amount, considering that’s the amount chaebol senior managers who are in their forties and fifties get paid. But of course it won’t get her the luxurious lifestyle that she has been allegedly living, unless there was outside support. And why is her mother, whom I heard is poor, sending her millions of Won, just to get by??
Also, is it me or is she complaining that she got only 1% of 28 billion Won that the KDB supposedly gives out to the art world each year?
#14,
She’s saying that, to media claims that she’s only got a high school education as she plagarised her dissertation, she’s got no comment.
mins0306, I agree with you - when she gives examples or explanations, they simply come across as bitches and boasts.
Actually, though, I thought she was right to come back when she did, in the manner she did: right after a partial change in public sympathy as a result of the nude photos, and looking humbled before the media spotlight at the airport. Now it looks like she back in form.

Good, gbnhj. I think the same.
논문 표절을 , she copied someone’s PhD dissertation. This, she admits.
고졸로 내린 언론한테는, thus the media concluded she never got a PhD, and only graduated from high school. Odd, right? Yes, odd. The thing is, the media decided she only graduated from high school, not because she copied her PhD dissertation. The media came up with that because there is no proof that she graduated from a Korean undergrad, a US undergrad, a US masters program, nor a US PhD program.
저는 아무 할 말이 없습니다,…sigh, indeed.
What’s she trying to say is that the media erased her BA, MBA, and PhD degree based solely on the fact that she copied her PhD dissertation.
Truly sad.
I don’t know about you, but I truly feel sorry for her.
#22 wjk
WJK, you have your facts wrong. The media did not erase her degrees. It has been confirmed directly from the universities that she never had them.
Wjk, Yale University has publicly announced that there was never a Shim JeongAh attending there. It’s more than a copied dissertation, dude. It is all a sham.

http://english.chosun.com/w21d.....20008.html
University of Kentucky has also confirmed she has no BA from there. They record her as having registered, enrolled a few semesters and left without ever getting a degree. It is all a sham.

Hugh, read carefully.
I was just explaining what SHE MEANT by what she said.
I don’t believe a word of what she said.
Her logic of plagiarized dissertation = high school grad, doesn’t jive.
Ah, you feel sorry for her delusional state. Got it. Sorry.
If you are not Korean you can never know how difficult the life.
University of Kentucky (UK)? I thought she claimed BA and MA from University of Kansas (KU). They’re different, you know.
But aren’t the basketball uniforms of both blue?
There is a rumor going around that she is Pres. Roh’s concubine.
And, Mr.Byun is just a fall guy. Taking all blame when **** hits the fan.
People’s tax money was given to Buddhist temples for restoration of historic art objects. However, the monks had to mail back a part of money to Ms. Shin’s account.
Who is behind in this outrageous robbery? Some say it must be Pres. Rho to pull off this kind of highway robbery. Most civil servants in Korea do not have guts to do such an evil act.
Only the top guy. The fish stinks from the head.
baduk, Welcome back!!!
@28, 29
She doesn’t know the difference either.
There is a rumor going around that she is Pres. Roh’s concubine.
Really? Baduk, where did you see/hear that? The one I’ve heard most often had her being KDJ’s illegitimate child, with Noh assisting/protecting her.

As I posted a few weeks ago, the evidence is readily available that shows she never submitted her dissertation, and therefore never graduated from Yale.

…correction: ,evidence that she never….is readily available.

I am amazed by this link. This is how easy it was, this is all Dongkuk University had to do to verify her diploma? Search for 5 minutes on google?
Staggering.
Yeah, about 5 minutes on google…but that’s because I wasted 4 and a half minutes searching for a list of graduates instead of a list of dissertations.
I just noticed that my correction in #35 is a bit funky. Bah, you get the gist of it.
