It Could Have Happened Here (or there, as it were)

In his latest Hardcore History podcast, Dan Carlin makes reference to the supposed plot by the Du Pont family, US Steel, Standard Oil, and several other major US businesses to back a coup against FDR in 1933. Don’t know if there really was a plot (for some reason, the cast of plotters reads a little too closely to a lineup of Soviet bogeymen), but it’s fascinating, none the less.

General Smedley Butler (he won the Medal of Honor twice) was tapped by the conspirators to be the figurehead dictator, but blew the whistle on them instead. Congressional hearings corroborated his testimony.

And did you know Prescott Bush was a Nazi? Real American history is so much more fascinating than the bullshit they teach in school.

Yes, I heard the podcast too. When I worked for The Thom Hartmann Program we had a historian who specialized in the Gen. Smedley Butler episode for our Thursday “Everything You Know Is Wrong” segment.

The investigation is in the public record, as is Butler’s testimony.
