A murder-suicide involving a Korean-Canadian family has stunned an upscale British Columbia neighborhood. Absolutely terrible. [Globe and Mail, HT to reader]

Hey Koreans, how bad does English teachers smoking pot sound now? You go to my country and do THIS

    http://ca.news.yahoo.com/s/capress/bodies_found
“When asked why a blood spatter team from Vancouver was being brought in when the coroner said no gunshots were involved, a police officer at the scene responded: “Use your imagination.
“It’s bad, for 30 years of doing this, it’s bad.” ”

Use my imagination? A Republic-Of-Uncontrollable-Rage (hat tip to Incestuous Amplification) ajosshi loses it and goes to the knife drawer….

The article Hugh linked to mentions another BC murder-suicide which apparently involves Koreans:

‘Vancouver, March 2004: Daewook Kwon, apparently facing financial ruin after business problems, kills his wife Keumhee, 44, and daughter Daisy, 18, before hanging himself’.

The crazy ajosshi who kills his entire family after financial distress is a disturbing trend that’s also experienced in L.A.

I’m the Marmot reader who provided for this story.

It turns out that I know the man in question who is suspected of murdering his family before killing himself. I didn’t know this when I submitted the link.

He ran a Korean restaurant here in town. It was really good - nice decor, friendly staff, and good Korean food. He was also easy to talk to, and it seems we shared acquaintances in the Korean community here in town.

It’s just a tragedy. If it’s true, I can’t believe he did what he did.

    Ugly Koreans!

You know entire family slaughter by one member is so common in Korea.

제 버릇 개 주랴 even in foreign countries.

This is a pretty crazy story, especially since it happened in Victoria, BC, where I’m from! Oak Bay is a municipality that has a huge retirement community full of wealthy people. Murders and killings rarely happen here…

    #1 and #5,

Let’s not use these tragedies to rant against Koreans in general, eh?

My wife and I lived in Victoria for two years. This kind of thing is way out of proportion to the usual goings-on. As the news story alluded to, in sleepy Oak Bay, there hadn’t been even a single murder in almost 40 years, until just a couple of years ago.

There were only a handful of Korean businesses in the Victoria area when we were living there. It’s a small community. This is going to be a shock both to the local Korean community, and to the Victoria population at large.

    Requiescat in pacem.

    @#1 and 5:

As Wanggon has already pointed out, this sort of crime knows no cultural boundaries. A woman’s risk of domestic violence is greatest when she tries to leave.

    #10,

Yes. I would guess that, as anywhere else, the vast majority of murder victims here are killed by someone they know, usually a family member. It’s not that murder is far less common in South Korea than Canada (the rate is about the same), but rather that in Korea it is quickly swept under the rug. If it isn’t in the papers, it isn’t a problem.

Why? Because they are so scrupulously fair and non-judgemental to me and those who look like me? TV networks here beam anti-me propaganda into my parent-in-law living rooms every now and again, fer chrissake.

I’ve earned the right to diss Koreans, fairly or unfairly. They have no problem dishing nasty shit out, so let them take it once in a while. Although posting on the Hole, I know very very few Koreans are actually aware of anything here…

Of course there are murderers and crazy people throughout the world, but this type of murder/suicide seems to be more common with Koreans for some reason. In other cultures, the bankrupt father might just kill himself, but for some reason these guys decide to take their families with them. Could be an extreme example of the negative side effects of excessive co-dependence in Korean family life.

It is a big story here, apparently the 911 call was placed by the wife as hubbie dear was chasing her down. He also tried to kill her by crashing is Range Rover into a pole in July. He was charged with aggrevated assualt but released on bail against the wishes of the Victoria Police.

I am sure these things happen in Korea due to the craziness that Koreans are famous for but I doubt it would make it into the Korean papers.

As an aside, I bought my first motorcycle at that address many years ago.

Hugh, we might be crazy but it rarely snows in Victoria.

I agree with WangKon936 : it’s best to avoid painting all Koreans with such a broad brush.

These kinds of murder-suicides are not unique to Korean culture.

If you want to vent your anger at injustices heaped upon you while in Korea or from those or Korean descent, you may get a little more sympathy if you do it with discretion and avoid painting current and potential Korean allies with the same racial brush you accuse of being painted on you.

    Golden rule ?

Why do you have this perception? #11 and #18 seem to think that this sort of crime isn’t publicized in Korea. If this is true, where would you get the idea that murder-suicide is more common with Koreans and how could you possibly compare unless you’ve seen stats? The plural of anecdote is not data.
