Seoul Shinmun on Interracial Lovin’

The Seoul Shinmun looks at everyone’s favorite topic — interracial couples and why people date outside the tribe.
I don’t have the time to translate them at the moment, although I’m sure commenters will summarize the salient points below. If I were to put it all in one sentence, however, it would go something like this [...]

Pres. Roh Cancels Summit with Pres. Bush

According to the Joongang-Ilbo(Korean), Pres. Roh has canceled what may be his last summit with Pres. Bush before he steps down from office.  The summit was originally scheduled for late September, but because of the scheduled summit with NK leader Kim Jong-Il, Pres. Roh has apparently decided to forgo the summit with Pres. Bush. Instead, [...]

The fat bear might get the throne

Kim “Mouseketeer” Jong-nam has returned from exile in China and appears to be in the running to take over the family business.
Kim Jong-il’s next oldest son is only in his twenties and, with the old man apparently in bad shape, we could be in for an interesting succession struggle.

Some Questions for Roh about the summit

My latest K-Times piece is about the upcoming inter-Korean summit and how I hope the National Assembly takes advantage of the summit delay to find out exactly what the administration is up to with regards to North Korea.
Here are a few questions that came to mind:
_ How much money does the administration plan to offer [...]

DJ certainly has a pair

If nothing else, former president Kim Dae-jung still has some chutzpah (Korea Times):
Former President Kim Dae-jung urged President Roh Moo-hyun to apologize for having approved a probe into allegations his 2000 inter-Korean summit was bought, lawmakers from the pro-governing camp said Thursday.
I’m not going to say that DJ is a crook, but the man got [...]

Foreign Money Is So Foreign

Per a Chosun Ilbo article, local banks are charging fees for depositing anything other than Won and U.S. Dollars.
Foreign banks, like HSBC, charge none. I thought Korean banks liked money too but I guess they like getting more money even better.

Another Vietnam, Indeed!

In the WSJ, Max Boot of the Council on Foreign Relations argues that the problem with President Bush’s Vietnam analogy (pertaining to Iraq) is not that it was inaccurate, but that it was incomplete.

Korea and the Sino-Japanese War

In the Asahi Shimbun, Hiroki Fukuda reflects on Korea and the First Sino-Japanese War.

Foreigners Break 1 Million Mark

Quick! Hide the women and children!
Yonhap reports the number of big, stinky foreigners has broken the million mark, including short term sojourners and illegal residents.
Yonhap said this indicates Korea is rapidly developing into a multicultural and multiracial society, but urgent measures must be taken regarding the 220,000 who are here illegally.
