The Case of the Mysteriously Accelerating Car

This article in the Chosun reminded me of a Sir Arthur Conan Doyle mystery. Just why did the Samsung plant at Kiheung experience a sudden loss of power that brought down several production lines? One Samsung official said it was “as mysterious as a car abruptly accelerating.

It reminds one of the fire that occurred over a decade ago in a Japanese memory production plant. When a fire started in a basement, far away from any production facilities, just the rumour of a “fire” at the plant caused a global spike in RAM prices, one that I remember well since it cost me almost three hundred dollars for a little bit of memory. One can only wonder at the timing of this fire since Samsung shares have been down lately.

I only hope this does not presage a rash of fires, breaking out all over Korea though it does look like quite a few mortgage companies in the U.S. may be having some fire sales soon.

Though I’m not generally given to conspiracy theorizing, the timing of this “mysterious” outage is rather suspicious, coming on the heels as it did of an abysmal first half attributed largely to a global DRAM glut that sharply drove down prices.

On the other hand, it seems too obvious for precisely the same reason. They couldn’t be that obtuse… could they?
