I know a woman who quit that paper a few months ago. When she got the job she was delighted - she had a journalism background and she was finally going to be able to get out of teaching, do some real journalism.

But they just used her as a proofreader, from 2 pm to past 10 pm, no other input wanted.

You bothered to post over a missing article in a headline? Slow news day? And why is a round-eyed editor needed? I think there are plenty of native English speaking gyopos qualified for the job.

Some insight about English-language news media here: These newspapers do hire round eyes to edit the copy and in some rare instances, round eyes with genuine journalism backgrounds are employed. It is not always just a bunch of disgruntled former hagwon/kindergarten teachers who could not care less about the quality of their work.

But at the end of the day, whatever careful attention to detail done by the round eyes is almost always undermined by Korean desk editors/managing editors who think they know better. Or worse still, Korean page designers/layout staff who do not speak a word of English but will make headline or caption changes to make the copy fit.

It is very frustrating. And the constant criticism from English readers toward the papers is well deserved but it should be from a different standpoint: Instead of asking, "Don't you people have editors?" you should say, "Why don't you fools listen to your editors?"
