Former commenter Mark says goodbye to the Marmot’s Hole — too many intelligentsia and Coreans, apparently.
Sorry to See You Go

Good…now I can say things like the Seahawks suck… the Seahawks are a bunch of loser crybabies who still whine about the Superbowl.
I think the problem is that there are too many narcissistic jackasses posting on Marmot’s that work for fancy-pants Chaebols, and won’t let anyone forget it.
Did I say the Seahawks suck?
Mark,
If by “Coreans” you mean “ultra-nationalistic (wanna-be) Koreans”, yes, they are annoying and troll-like (*cough* dtlan *cough*) at worst, but add a valuable check on rampant anti-Koreanism at best.
I’d actually argue the regular commentators on the ‘Hole are too knee-jerk biased against Korea.
As for intelligentsia, you lost me there. Isn’t adding intelligence to a discussion a good thing ?
I’d post on your blog, but the Windows Live ID stopped me cold in my tracks.
Um, okay. Bye.
If you’re gonna go, then just go, Mark - no need for announcements on your blog. I guess I don’t see a good reason to run down another guy’s blog on your own.
You need to filter the comments. I skip over all comments by certain commenters which I know will have nothing enlightening to add. Nobody said you have to read every troll on this site.
Aw c’mon, the free ticket post by Michael is the proverbial straw?
Oh well, buh-bye.
Mark,
Just kidding above… I personally liked your smart-ass one-liners.
So did I, but like Miguk Namja said, the “Coreans” are a valuable balance to the some of the anti-Korean stuff I occassionally see in the comments. Heck, a lot of the Korean/gyopo commenters are hesitent to comment here because of some of the stuff that gets posted.
Who’s Mark?
I honestly don’t get it.
He’s leaving because the place has been “so infiltrated by the intelligentsia and Coreans,” but the Death Proof comment thread was the last straw?
The “Coreans” were nowhere to be found on that thread (dlatn’s not a Corean at all, just a plain and simple troll—and you can’t blame a dog for licking his balls, can you? It’s just what he does.) The problem with the comments was most assuredly not highfalutin’ intellectualism run amok. On the contrary, garden variety douchebaggery ruled the day, to wit:
* ditto the lameass troll’s sentiments!
* how dare you offer free stuff at a time that’s not convenient for me!
* westerners might get this film better? puke!
* tarantino sucks!
… et cetera ad nauseam. If that’s what passes for intelligentsia these days, forget hanbok (pace Robert)—I’m gonna start wearing a dunce cap.
No, seriously, who’s Mark?
I don’t remember any commenter named Mark, either. Easy come, easy go.
The Seahawks do NOT suck.
Mark has chosen to drink the permanent cup of STFU.
Can’t believe it was that sad, pointless Death Proof comment thread that pushed him over the edge. I mean I can see how Young Rocco could make one renounce the Internet or the written word altogether, but….
The dude who used face/ch’emyŏn to explain/justify anything and everything.
#13 -
Was/is that his gravatar?
#15 Yes, I believe it was that laconic, witty punster Mark with the STFU avatar. I don’t recall face being a big part of his postings. Seemed more USFK than chaebol employee.
#16 I wasn’t referring to him.
I don’t recall “face” either…
Yeah, what was his username?
Anyways. Do I fall in the “Corean” camp or the “intelligensia” camp or both?
#18 -
Well, you misspelled “intelligentsia,” so….
You guys have the attention span of a goldfish on crack. A simple search on his blog yielded two hits, and a search here would yield more…
OTOH the only reason I remember is because of his using 체면 as an all-encompassing explanation riled me.
# 19,
Good! I don’t want to be part of the “intelligentsia”… has too much of a communist bent to it.
Did he leave because he lost 체면?
‘갈래면 가지 왜돌아보오?’ 윤복희
just come back.
Cold and heartless commenters!
A: “Good-bye, cruel world!”
B: “Sez who?”
Mark was the dude with the avatar of the WWII-era GI holding up a cup of hot, steaming coffee and the caption, “How about a nice cup of STFU?”
I wish him well, but it’s kinda sadly ironic, that his avatar was the epitome of cold-shouldered cynicism, but he gave up on this blog because of comments in a similar vein, and now he’s getting the ultimate sendoff—Mark who?
Do I fall in the “Corean” camp or the “intelligensia” camp or both?
“Intelligentsia” refers to liberal uppity minorities educated by the damn Jews in elite universities, both of whom are the leading causes of the demise of this Great Nation of Ours, by God.
“Corean” refers to damn inbred ingrate wacko-gooks who spit in the face of America despite being liberated from Nips and Commies and not having a pot to piss in 60 years ago…who could probably benefit from a good character-building combat tour in Iraq.
But the question is, can Korea-liking Expats qualify to be considered members of the Corean intelligentsia…?
Anyhowz, Netizen Kim is quite correct that the bizzare use of “intelligentsia” as an insult or derogatory label is a peculiar American thang, a long USA populist tradition stretching back at least to when Alexis de Tocqueville noticed it in the 1830s. It’s currently a favor of right-wing Republicans… Recall how they attacked Kerry for knowing how to speak a foreign language, enough that he had to try to hide that ability. Despise intelligent people, and you get presidents like GWB, wars like Iraq…

You might be “intelligentsia” if you have a humanities degree and nothing else; if your idea of intellectual rigor doesn’t go beyond elementary logic 101; if your notion of high culture is excessive verbiage or if you feel a need to use fancy words to express commonplace ideas; if you think patronization instead of argument counts as a legitimate reply.
OTOH, you might be “corean” if you’re kyopo, and you’re a guy, and you’re emotional, and write in curt, l.a. gangsta style.
You’re neither of the above, wangkon.
Anyway, I read that comments page about the free tickets. I didn’t see much of a problem with it except for 1 comment by 1 particular poster. Such a comment couldn’t have been produced by a less practiced asshole, but that’s just my opinion.
Speaking of the departed, what’s become of dogbertt, baduk and Mizar5?
Then again, how can one be sorry about an ass who professes that he still eat the Hell out of some chicken cheese ramyon, though. One of the only two edible Korean foods.
Fare-fookin’-well dude.
ol’ Baduk, now there’s some real intelligentsia… in bizzaro-universe.
I applaud his decision. Now only if some others…
