De mortuis nihil nisi bonum and all that - but I always found the Scooter to be an extremely annoying, adenoidal announcer. I had thought he was the worst until my Uncle moved me to the mid-west and I had the displeasure of hearing one Harry Karry (sp?). At least the Scooter wasn’t full of himself.

The Money Store, Carvel and Crazy Eddie!

If that doesn’t say, “growing up in the tri-state area in the late seventies/early eighties”, I don’t know what does.

The funny thing was, outside of New Haven, we were just to the west of that New York sphere of influence and it was only Carvel and Crazy Eddie for us.

When we’d go to my grandparents’ house in Bridgeport (the westernmost city in the metropolitan area), that’s where you could see the New York channels and hence, Yankee games and Phil Rizzuto commercials.

I grew up in NE Penna within range of NYC cable channels and Phil Rizzuto and the late Carvel ice-cream guy were the voices of New York for me in the 1970s.

Hearing the news makes me think back to my grandparents’ house in the early eighties and sitting in front of the enormous black and white TV. We weren’t allowed to change the channel, especially if a Yankee game was on.

Phil used to be in those commercials…what were they for? An insurance company?

You know, if there were one food (besides REAL cheesecake) that could never, ever catch on in Korea, I’d have to go with cannoli.

I’ll have a few for you since I’m back in the continental US.
