The only debate I’m aware of thus far is whether it is just another special effects heavy shitty movie or one of the most embarrassingly shitty movies of all time (a title currently held by Yongary).

I feel sorry for all legitimate directors in Korea who have worked so hard to build up a positive image for Korean film. It’s all about to go down the toilet in one fell flush once it hits American theaters.

Shim is no dummy, and knows what works with a Korean audience, which is personal tales of struggle and super-sized Korean pride. He has certainly figured out how to craft a pathetic, pandering, tear-jerking appeal to dimwitted nationalism with his sappy ending.

But by all accounts, he still has not figured out how to craft a good film. And since audiences outside of Korea don’t give two flying fucks about sad stories of woe and whiting! Korean pride, he’s going to fall flat on his face if he thinks that formula will conquer Hollywood.

American audiences will grow impatient with the 30-minute Korean-language flashback (unless dubbed in English). The use of Korean words where English ones would’ve sufficed is also tiring - why not say “Dragon-maker” instead of “Emogi”?

This is the worst sort of B-movie. Ewe Boll has some competition now.
