Couldn’t Have Happened to a More Deserving Asshole, But…

Roy Pearson, i.e., “the schumck who sued the Chung family for US$54 million for a lost pair of pants,” may soon be out of a job [WaPo blog]. Which might not be a good thing for the Chungs. (HT to reader)

Because these results were more than foreseeable, I just wonder what made Pearson so angry that he chose to kill his own career. I think, by destroying himself, he wanted to show the world his uncontrollable anger, which is probably related to (the frustration in) his life, not simply to the Chungs. What a noisy suicide.

Well at least his uncontrollable anger was not as strong as cho’s. Seems like he had a problem with koreans treating black people without respect. After all if a bunch of foreigners moved into your neighborhood, profited of of you and treated you like garbage, you may be upset to.
And it is frustrating when dry cleaners lose your stuff. If you have ever had it happen, you may understand some of the frustration.

Anyway, he may have had a screw lose, but how many angry korean guys do as well.

Somebody brought up Cho again. *GROAN*

” Seems like he had a problem with koreans treating black people without respect. After all if a bunch of foreigners moved into your neighborhood, profited of of you and treated you like garbage, you may be upset to.”

That is a highly presumptuous statement. I don’t think any Marmot commenters took their dry cleaning to the Chungs, and thus, we do not know how the Chungs treated their customers.

Is Kwon a new troll or an old troll with a new sock?

Amen, Sonagi, on both counts.

If you look at the guy’s history, his problem wasn’t with “koreans (sic) treating black people without respect,” it was with using the law to harass people, e.g. his ex-wife. Witness his 248 (!) requests for admissions during pre-trial discovery—in a no-fault divorce case. (The requests were denied by the trial judge as excessive on their face.)

If I had to guess, based on almost no evidence whatsoever, I’d have to say Pearson probably didn’t expect this will get out of control like this. I’m sure he certainly did not intent to openly commit a career harikari.

Fact is, men in position of power abusing that power for their own ego’s sake is an old, old story. Just look at all the parking lot attendant/guard ajussis in Korea… When you give men of low self-esteem a uniform and a little bit of power, inevitably those men abuse that power to boost their own self-worth… They want to see others grovel in front of them, and give them some “respect”. This is basic human nature, in every corner of the world.

My guess is that Pearson wanted to see more apologetic groveling from his lowly dry cleaners when he said “do you know who I am?” (or something like that). I’m sure he didn’t expect that this story will get picked up by Washington Post, get national attention, and then the dry cleaners raise their own legal defense fund and fight back. What started as a simple exercise in teaching your neighborhood tradesmen to respect and fear you has, before he realized what was happening, turned into a trap he can’t back out.

I guess what I am saying is that I don’t believe Pearson is crazy, or he was knowingly committing career suicide. I simply think that he is a man with anger management issues, stemming from a very low self-esteem propped up by an important job. You know, like millions of other people out there.
