U Penn professor Lee Jung-sik (a really nice gentleman, BTW) claims it was Southern communists that killed left-wing independence activist Lyuh Woon-hyung, not radical rightists as is commonly believed. UPDATE: The Chosun Ilbo (English) has a better piece on this.

“Lyuh”? That’s almost as bad as Chough Soon-hyun (조순형). Maybe it’s something about guys who have names that end in 형.
The rich irony in this story is that virtually the entire leadership of the communist People’s Party of Korea were eventually liquidated by Kim Il-Sung by the mid 1950’s, as part of a purging of all potentially competing political factions to Kim’s own historically narrow power base.
