The truth behind all of this may lie with what Inspector Singh mentioned about the ‘rogues’: ‘[W]e can’t do anything. We cannot shoot them or beat them as Hindus worship monkeys’.

That damned monkey’s no rogue - he’s just got the police on the take! I’d bet my last banana on it.

I saw a Korean lady get her sunglasses nicked by a monkey at Uluwatu in Bali. Happens all the time there. Rumor has it locals have the little blighters trained to take the goodies back to them for snacks.

I think I saw a CNN report a while back on the monkeys of Varanasi. The place is infested!

Sounds terrible, but monkeys can be real bastards. I almost got knocked off my scooter by one outside Angkor Wat. He came out of the trees and actually charged me from the side. He tagged the side of the bike, but fortunately didn’t get his dirty hands on me. All totally unprovoked, I might add. (Well, being tormented/fed/displaced by humans over the years could have had something to do with it…)
