An Uijeongbu court has sentenced four middle school boys to prison sentences for gang-raping a middle school girl and leaving her on a hillside in late February.
The victim eventually died of hypothermia.
The boys received maximum sentences of 2 years—3 years, 6 months and minimum sentences of 1 year, 6 months — 3 years.
Two boys who did not directly take part in the attack were referred to juvenile court.
The boys were convicted of gang-raping a 14-year-old girl with whom they’d been drinking on a hillside in Namyangju City on Feb 27. The boys then left the girl, who had passed out due to the alcohol and the rapes, on the hillside, where she would freeze to death.

None of the news reports say the boys were from Newfoundland.
Or that I read.
Yes, as far as I could tell, none were from Newfoundland. Or any of the Maritimes.
Nor were any of them members of USFK or dependents thereof.
Mind you, this line of commentary will surely attract the attention of the Tu Quoque Crew, who will not tire of pointing out stuff like this. (Stole your thunder there, kiddies. Sorry.)
To me, this doesn’t say much about Korea or America or any country in particular. The leitmotif here is man’s inhumanity to man.
Woops, it has come to my attention that Newfoundland is NOT part of the Canadian Maritimes.
Pretty short sentences, but I’m not too surprised.
The Korea Times mentioned that case in passing two weeks after it happened (as is usual in the English language media here) and I found this news report at the time.
#4…but it’s one of the Atlantic Provinces.
Gosh, The Marmot’s Hole really is THE place to gather information about Canada…
I don’t know which is more disturbing, the fact that American culture is increasingly more visible here or the fact that American justice isn’t. These kids will serve more time in the Korean military and consider it to be little more than an inconvenience to their lives. What message do they get from a two year sentence for raping and killing one of their peers?
Hang the bastards!
They’ve demonstrated they are fully qualified to be North Korean prison guards, so why not just put them on a plane and send them to Pyongyang (North will take them gladly if they are accompanied by an appropriate amount of hard currency, equivalent to whatever it would cost to incarcerate them in the south).
I bet this “sentence” would get the attention of their peers all over the ROK, much more so than any possible prison sentence. And it would be another step towards “reunification” — a “win-win” for everybody.
Another stupid verdict from Korean judicial system. The way I look at, they should just castrate them for crimes like this.
They’re minors, thus the short sentences. Hang them, castrate them, whatever. It won’t bring back the victim. It is a sad and messed up story, and as someone pointed out, it sounds like something that might happen in North America. But not Newfoundland!
Is the “Newfoundland” reference meant to be evocative of this movie?

Turns out the movie (besides the 1948 original, there’s evidently a 1967 remake) was based on a play, which was in turn based on a real deaf-mute woman of Prince Edward Island (not Newfoundland).
Official motto of the province of Prince Edward Island:
Parva Sub Ingenti
(Latin: The Small Protected By The Great)
old enough to gangrape is old enough to do some hard time. they should be put in prison right up until their military time. at least.
Their sentences are absurdly short, given this poor girl lost her life after being raped. It’s simply a travesty of justice; I wish her family peace as they deal with this further insult to their daughter’s memory.
You’d expect this sort of behavior from Canadians…
