Where Is Home?

Norimitsu Onishi has written an interesting portrait of a North Korean refugee in Inchon and of the reality of being caught between two societies and ideologies.

You really get a sense of how N.K. is like another planet.

It must be very difficult to make the adjustment to S. Korea. But, I was surprised by some of Lee Chan’s reactions - for instance, he was upset when a security guard ordered him or his male friend to take off his earrings when arriving in S Korea. I guess I can understand someone from a liberal western country getting angry about that, but I can’t imagine that there are too many guys with earrings in N Korea. The nostalgia for the North, complaints about earrings, etc, makes me wonder how much I can believe about accounts of the North. On the other hand, some of his disillusionment with S Korea could be the result of overly high expectations about the place.
