ROK Navy Base Vote Canceled Amidst Violence

A vote on the proposed construction of a ROK Navy base in the village of Gangjeong on Jeju Island was canceled after things got ugly, with villagers on both sides of the issue brawling in the village meeting hall [MBC TV, Korean].

For what it’s worth, it was supporters of the base who destroyed the ballot station and stole the ballot box.

We’re happy to report, however, that no live pigs were drawn and quartered during the altercation.

UPDATE: Oddly enough, the “pro-base” faction was being lead by an association of haenyeo, Jeju Island’s famous women divers. You can see this actually in the video — haenyeo are real tough ajumma.  Definitely not the sort you’d want to be on the wrong side of a dispute of.

Looks like a bunch of ajumas were in the thick of it. I saw several adjoshis get flung aside by them.

When people get that excited over an issue, financial gain is often on the back of their minds.
