It was such a nice winch

Australian English teachers — when they aren’t threatening the Flower of Korean Womanhood with AIDS, they’re getting busted by Busan police for climbing aboard strangers’ yachts and stealing their winches [Busan Ilbo, Korean].

Let’s see, the allegedly thieving teacher is 50 years old and the winch was worth close to $1000??? Something doesn’t add up.

It must have been a nice winch. And I believe the story says the winch on his boat broke, and when you need a winch, you need a winch…

There are yachts in Korea? In Korea? Really?

Golly, what’s the tariff on that?

And yes, winches can be $1000+. A decent cleat will set you back $50+. All the tackle, halyards, etc. runs $20 - $150 per piece.

Who can resist the siren call of such a winch?

    Richardson, what the heck!?

Finally, a crime story with a difference! I figured the guy was just drunk, but according to the story, he’s a yacht-owning English teacher…that’s a new one. Does he sail from port to port and teach to make money?

Anyhow, the story estimates the winch’s value at 900,000.

    900,000 Won, that is.

Sorry, Sewing. I guess I was responding to the ‘why steal a winch’ sentiment.

No need to apologize—it was an interesting story you linked to there. I just figured it was bogus, though, because the way those folks were talking about their, um, passions was just too unreal.

    a yacht-owning English teacher…

That ought to raise some eyebrows with LE looking to bust some more foreigners smuggling drugs into the country.
