Colbert does Korean pop

by Robert Koehler on May 12, 2007

in Asides, Korean Tabloid Crap

To prove he’s more influential than Rain, Stephen Colbert does his own Korean music video [Comedy Central]. Painful. Very painful. At the same time, it does show Korea’s rising cultural profile—just a couple a years ago, no one would be making jokes like this (HT to Tony)

Hot Lips and Hawkeye?!

Call the ambassador.

This just shows that the list is a joke.

Colbert: “I’ve battled this guy on the Korean pop charts for years . . .

:o )

4 cm May 12, 2007 at 11:03 am

LOL. That was good.

#4 cm, I second that.

Hopefully, the die hard Rain fans won’t get their hands on the Steve Colbert video, because they will certainly do some things that will ruin all the fun.

“I’m gonna be all over you like an egg on a bowl of bibimbap”

LOL

7 Wedge May 12, 2007 at 3:16 pm

That is hella funny.

8 babotaengi May 12, 2007 at 4:04 pm

Koehler: do you mean “painful like a Korean R&B video?” That clip had me in tears.

9 Robert Koehler May 12, 2007 at 5:27 pm

Correct me if I’m wrong, but isn’t the picture of “Rain” actually Lee Jun-ki?

10 Brendon Carr May 12, 2007 at 6:05 pm

That’s what my daughter says too. I know it’s not Rain — his slightly retarded-looking visage is unmistakable to me — but have no idea who it is.

I sense a lawsuit coming…

We can eat some Kim Che… Wait for the “backlash”

13 littlebrownasian May 12, 2007 at 6:59 pm

ROFL! That has got to be the most hilarious music video I’ve ever seen. “Singing in Korean”, heh!

14 babotaengi May 12, 2007 at 7:00 pm

I wonder if they deliberately used a picture of the wrong person to add insult to injury…

15 bumfromkorea May 12, 2007 at 7:47 pm

I can see people who’s not familiar with Colbert Report and its structure be offended by it. As a hardcore Colbert fan… LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!

16 Gillian May 12, 2007 at 10:14 pm

Ouch, but dang that was good!!!!!!!!!!!

17 Richardson May 12, 2007 at 10:58 pm

I don’t care much for his show, but that was hilarious, can’t deny it.

18 Maekchu May 13, 2007 at 1:39 am

“Get into my Hyundai…We can eat some kimchi”.

LOL.

Best Korean pop video I’ve ever seen.

19 michael May 13, 2007 at 9:36 am

LOL “What else is Korean?”

His Korean pronunciation is better than mine :(

20 seouldout May 13, 2007 at 11:48 pm

And the joke is missed.

Go get him, thin-skinned VANKers.

21 Sonagi May 14, 2007 at 5:36 am

The reporter missed the joke, but netizens got it. They all chided the reporter for being thin-skinned about the comedy skit.

22 gbevers May 14, 2007 at 7:25 am

Sonagi,

Not “all” the netizens chided the reporter. Read deeper.

23 조엘 May 16, 2007 at 1:23 am

That picture is 비. It’s just not a very good picture.

24 10DH May 16, 2007 at 9:08 am

Pissing off Koreans is always funny.

25 peninsular aborigine May 16, 2007 at 10:02 am

I always thought my singing room pronunciation was much better than my everyday butchery of the language. Colbert seems to bear this out. His spoken Korean sounded a little bit like Chinese to me.
