Actually, on a related theme - I noticed there'll be a public discussion at the WPost on the high cost of weddings in the US, which got me thinking about the high cost of weddings here.  I had always wondered why people pay so much to get married in Korea - especially if you include money the guy is expected to have saved for an apt, car, etc.  My conclusion is that these must be ways of signalling a credible commitment.  Showing that you will pay very high price to do something (like get married) is meant to show the depth of your commitment to the relationship.  Otherwise, it's hard to understand why people pay so much.</description>
