Yakhyeon Catholic Church

Continued from here.

The next day (i.e., Sunday), the wife and I were in the vicinity of Seoul Station, so I figured it might be nice to pop by Yakhyeon Catholic Church (now named Jungnimdong Catholic Church). The Cathedral of Chartres it might not be, but Yakhyeon Catholic Church is extremely important in that it [...]

Gamgok Parish Church

Continuing the theme of buildings built by Dead White Guys, I bring you Part II of my Catholic church post (See Part I here).

From Anseong, we (i.e., Andy Jackson and I) got on a bus to Janghowon in nearby Icheon-si. And from Janghowon, we walked across the river to its sister city, Gamgok-myeon, Eumseong-gun [...]

Good luck with that

A Korean scholar has asked China to do something about the toxic yellow dust coming from its ever-growing desert.  The dust itself would not be so bad if the Chinese were not in the habit of mixing it will all kinds of harmful goodies.

Seoul plays tough with Pyongyang… kinda

(Since everyone here at the Marmot’s Hole is sick of posting on Nork denuclearization, I am taking one for the team here.)
It seems that the Roh administration is actually asking for some limited reciprocity from North Korea in exchange for all the aid it is giving them (Chosun):
Unification Minister Lee Jae-joung on Monday said Seoul will [...]

Coping with Depression and Mental Illness

A question just as important, and probably more pressing, than how Koreans might react to a Cho Seung-hui-esque massacre on their own soil, is how this country as a whole deals with depression and mental illness. This weekend brought the unfortunate news that Korea now has the highest suicide rate in the world, a [...]

You won’t have Andy Jackson to kick around anymore

As of yesterday, I (Andy) am no longer executive director of Republicans Abroad-Korea.  Among other things, that means I am now free to say what I really think about Roh Moo-hyun.

Asking the difficult questions

For those of you who think Koreans avoid asking the difficult questions, the front page of this morning’s Hankyoreh Shinmun (Korean) asked, “If a ‘Seung-hui Cho’ incident happened in Korea, how would we react?”  The English version of that piece can be found here.
Since the shooting, I’d noticed quite a few netizens asking the same [...]

More on ambassador’s apology

Media Today (Korean) prints Ambassador Lee Tae-shik’s “apology speech” in Fairfax last week.  Even granting that their might have been language difficulties, the speech—given in English—was highly inappropriate.  A number of lawmakers think so, too [Pressian, Korean], and a recent radio interview with the ambassador dealing in part with the apology issue reportedly got ugly [...]

Jeongdong: the Coming of the West

UPDATE: For more on the history of the Jeongdong neighborhood (as well as some very cool old photographs), check out Gusts of Popular Feeling’s posts (I, II) on the area.
ORIGINAL POST: As some of you may know, I assist with a monthly walking tour of Seoul’s architecture, hosted by the Seoul Foundation for Arts and [...]

North Korean Freedom Week (and why DC needs to be reminded)

Folks in the States can’t make Dr. Norbert Vollertsen’s lecture tonight, but they have pletty they can do.
This is North Korean Freedom Week in DC (sponsored by the North Korea Freedom Coalition) (April 23-26).
Get the full schedule over at One Free Korea.
While I am on the subject, I just want to know what kind of twisted (person) is [...]

Quiet please . . .

This is why my neighborhood is at an all time level of quiet (very few truck vendors with loudspeakers).  Now if the recyclers would only bring back the “clink-clink” sound of the big scissors that is so Korean, in my mind . . .

Raptors nesting in Japan?

This is the first I have heard of this:
Japan wants to purchase up to 100 of the Air Force’s ultramodern F-22 warplanes, and the subject is expected to be on the agenda of the meeting next week between President Bush and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.
Naturally, the Chinese and their buddies in DC are not [...]

Hey look!

I was going to do another Cho Seung-hui post but thought better of it.  Instead, here is a nekkid chick on grass (obviously NWPS).

RAS Lecture on the Human Rights of North Korean Refugees this Monday Eve

The Korea Branch of the Royal Asiatic Society will hold its second semi-monthly Lecture-Meeting of April this Monday the 23rd (note that it’s not Tuesday as usual!), at 7:30 pm, in the 2nd-floor Resident’s Lounge of the Somerset Palace Residence (downtown, near Anguk Station, west of Exit #6; north of Jogye-sa Temple). All in English, [...]

Revival Meeting

The Chosun Ilbo notes that Roh Moo-hyun replaced his ministers of culture and tourism and maritime affairs and fisheries — again — for a total of 75 ministers in four years.  Perhaps now is a good time to have a revival meeting since there are so many ministers floating around.

HotDoll

Rob’s Catholic post is too nice for me to juxtapose the photo in this link, but anybody want to join me in getting the rights to distribute the HotDoll in Korea?

Korea’s Catholic Churches: Gupodong Catholic Church

Finally, my Catholic church post.
As you know, I was surfing the web a couple of weeks ago when I came across an excellent Korean blog that had a series on Korea’s historic Catholic churches.  Being, as I am, intensely interestingly in Korea’s modern architecture and, in addition, being from a Catholic family, I couldn’t help [...]

What he said

Adrian Hong (someone you will hear more from in the future) has a lot of smart stuff to say about the Cho shootings and the Korean (and Korean-American) reaction to them.

Hey, can I get that in ‘cracker white?’

More reason why you should never, ever use a translation program.

A backlash against the “fear of backlash”

Update: I just want to point out that this post was made by me (Andy Jackson), not Rob Koehler, the owner of this fine blog. Some folks don’t read the names at the end of the post. Also, I am in no way advocating violence of any kind against anyone (I meant “bitch slap” in [...]
