Media Today (Korean) prints Ambassador Lee Tae-shik’s “apology speech” in Fairfax last week. Even granting that their might have been language difficulties, the speech—given in English—was highly inappropriate. A number of lawmakers think so, too [Pressian, Korean], and a recent radio interview with the ambassador dealing in part with the apology issue reportedly got ugly [Chosun Ilbo, Korean], with the program host/interviewer apologizing to the listeners today.

The “uri nara projection syndrome” behind this has been gone over ad infinitum, no need to belabor it here, so I’m just glad to see some Korean lawmakers agree that the ambassador is out of line.
Is he being criticized because no apologies were due or because ‘no apologies were due’. “We’re the Roh Moo Hyun government, dammit. We don’t give apologies! We demand them!”
