Hey that's my office right behind the Pai Chai Hak Dang. They actually just finished "restoring" the building. If you come in the courtyard around the front you can still used the 20' overseas container used as the construction office. Like Mr. Neff, I too was stopped from taking pictures at the Russian Legation when I went a couple of months ago. I continued to take pictures and pretend like I couldn't understand, however. I figured it is because it overlooks the residence compound does it not? Maybe they don't want people scouting out the best way to attack by taking photos.

By the way Marmot is your robert neff the same Robert Neff who wrote the Nineteenth-Century Style chapter in "Korea Witness?"

Is that garden at the Anglican cathedral open to the public? I have got to check it out the next time I'm in town.

I've walked the big triangle around the outside of that area (Gwanghwamun-Seodaemun-Namdaemun), but I've never really explored the treasures inside, except for Deoksugung.

Mr. Neff---The only place we were asked to stop taking photos was in front of the U.S. Ambassador's Residence. Actually, I wouldn't mind checking out the Ambassador's Residence, since at least one of the old U.S. Legation buildings is still there (and controversially restored).

As for the Russian Legation, there sure are a lot of riot cops there, but on Sunday, I walked right up to the tower to snap photos, and all the riot cops did was smile at me.

michael---Advice well taken. I would have liked to have taken some interior shots this last time around, but unfortunately, I was helping lead a tour---a tour on a schedule---so we didn't have much time to dwell at each structure. We did go inside Seoul Anglican Cathedral, but alas, there was a choir practice (absolutely beautiful, BTW) going on in the main hall and a mass going on in the crypt, so photos were out of the question.

skookum---I'll have to look into that.
