You won’t have ‘Lawless’ Lawless to kick around no more

Multiple media sources are reporting that Deputy Under Secretary of Defense Richard Lawless is set to resign (YTN, Korean), citing health reasons.

No doubt some in the Roh administration and Uri Party view this as a good thing. They shouldn’t—Lawless might have been a hard ass, but he was also arguably the biggest Koreaphile in the Bush administration.

He’ll reportedly be replaced by his aide James Shin, formerly of the CIA and Georgetown University.

Lawless was implicated, wrongly, I think, in a recent spy case. There was a Mr. Baek who suppposedly gave him sensitive if not illegal information. There were numerous media articles about it and a friend of mine is a lawyer who is involved. Maybe this is a factor.

There’s that, too, but I’d prefer to wait until someone other than CBS reports it.

Hadn’t heard about those allegations before; sounds suspiciously like a set-up.
