A different Jon (no “h” this time) has rigged up a nifty site that weaves together related strands of the web to “reveal our modern mythology.” Plug in your favorite search term (a handy link to “north korea” sits front and center on the home page) and go to town. The author has [...]

Don’t have a Macau, man
John Berthelsen at the Asia Sentinel lambastes the Macau Bank deal. Some background here.
Touching… but dumb
I know this probably sounds like a touching love story [Korea Herald], but Jesus, even if we were to assume the best of intentions, has this guy bothered to consider the consequences of telling the world—including possibly her husband and kids—that she used to date a foreigner, and include her name, photo and last-known address [...]
. . . and Now A Subliminal Message
A certain Korean company has developed a way to discourage kids from playing computer games too long by the use of a subliminal message that would discourage excessive play.
This reminds me of the 1974 ban, in America, on subliminal messages in broadcasting that was enacted by the FCC (Federal Communications Commission), since they felt [...]
Sympathy for the Devil
Hey, who said the Hankyoreh can’t sympathize with Imperial Japanese war criminals [Hankyoreh Shinmun, English]? Or at least when the criminals are Korean. You guys want an apology and reparations from the Japanese government? You should count yourselves lucky you weren’t hanged, you murdering bastards!
To Call or Not to Call
This is a little article for those that wondered what CDMA and GSM is and why their cellphones do not work outside of Korea.
Han-jan or hanja?
Chinese characters in Korea now know how Latin feels in the West. Many college freshmen can not write their own names in hanja, most cannot write their parents’ names, and some mistake “bamboo mat” for “university.” The Chosun laments:
Our students do not learn Chinese characters while in school. They have almost completely [...]
Antique Alive
I just wanted to give props to this online store for Korean arts and handicrafts for some outstanding web design. One of the nicest-looking Korean-themed sites I’ve seen in English.
Strip like an onion
You know, I actually like this commercial [Chosun Ilbo, English]. See the actual CF here [Naver blog]. Chun, of course, will soon make her Hollywood debut in Ronny Yu’s upcoming “Blood: The Last Vampire” [IMDB].
USFK arrested ROK soldier for desertion
The Kyunghyang Shinmun (Korean) reports that a Korean soldier was arrested earlier this month by USFK authorities on charges of desertion.
The soldier, a U.S. green-card holder identified as Pvt. Kim, had enlisted in the U.S. Army in 2003 for a three-year stint (that was to include a tour in Iraq) in order to obtain U.S. [...]
The Great Goguryeo Wiki-War
Over at Salon, Andrew Leonard looks at the Sino-Korean Wiki-War over Goguryeo [Salon.com]. Be sure to read it in its entirety, but allow me to reprint the money shot:
Critics of Wikipedia are wont to point a finger at amateur authorship as a reason to distrust its veracity. Paradoxically, I find the lack of central authority [...]
Ugly Street Spammers
This is a good example of what Seoul City Government should be doing to all the sneaks that illegally post all through out the city, making the city a perpetual eyesore.
Pip Poop Power!
I’m not making this up. The power of pig poop. Who knew? I didn’t.
Operation Keelhaul: The Korean Edition?
ANU professor Tessa Morris-Suzuki takes a look at North Korea’s forgotten victims [Nautilus Institute], the Koreans who “returned” to North Korea from Japan between 1959 and 1984. She writes:
As the slow and difficult negotiations on North Korean denuclearisation unfold, one small group of a hundred people or so in Japan are watching proceedings with [...]
The Dance Continues
North Korea’s top nuclear negotiator couldn’t find a moment to sit down with Mohamed ElBaradei today, who traveled to Pyongyang to follow up on the Agreed Framework, Part Deux:
ElBaradei was unable to meet Kim Kye-Gwan, who was “too busy” preparing for the next round of six-nation negotiations on North Korea’s nuclear programmes, Kyodo News cited [...]
Guinness giving way in the Emerald Isle?
What the hell is this world coming to when Guinness consumption is declining in Ireland [Reuters]? (HT to Western Confucian)
ROK Navy beefing up with six Aegis ships
The Chosun Ilbo reports that the ROK Navy is pushing to put together a strategic expeditionary fleet [Chosun Ilbo, Korean] of six 7,000-ton Aegis warships, twelve 5,000-ton KDX-II destroyers [Global Security.org] and two light carrier-like LPX landing ships [Global Security.org] by 2020. This would give Korea the world’s third largest Aegis fleet behind the United [...]
SeoulGlow #5 – The Art of Daechuri
Sorry for the lull last week – the video project had taken a bit of a toll. But I’m getting back into the swing of things, have a new monitor to stop the headaches, and have our first user submission for you here, done by Bum Lee, the creator of the SeoulGlow animation intro, no [...]
