Railwaycharm. Sounds like the Australia of maybe 20 years ago. Vestiges of the old state-socialist system combined with an Anglo-Saxon/Celtic culture so beige you could paint your walls with it made dining out mostly something for the well heeled or a birthday treat. However, Asian immigration and Greek and Italian (somewhat less ubiquitous, but worth finding) restaurants changed all that. It's spread from the inner city to the burbs as well and I could take your for a drive around my city, Brisbane, that was not so long ago described as a country town masquerading as a big city and show you dozens of eateries you'd travel to Saigon or KL to find otherwise. What's more, they are cheap and the BYO policy of most places means you don't drop an arm and a leg on booze. Where were you in Aus, btw?

American facsimiles of Aussie culture. “Point Break”, or the Outback Steakhouse menu, anyone?

I agree. I have been to Australia many times and the food is either too expensive or down-right terrible. People will advise you to "just eat the pub food" Good advice if you want to rub elbows with the great un-washed.

They've been running that faux CSI ad on subway station screens for months now.

BTW, why this juxtaposition?

Make us feel foolish? Sure, it's kind of reminiscent of WWII period drama "The Sullivans" but the cringe I felt is nothing compared to American facsimiles of Aussie culture. "Point Break", or the Outback Steakhouse menu, anyone?

That Hyundai Capital Prime Loan commercial sure makes the hojus look pretty foolish. I hope the actors got paid well for that cheesiness.
