The Korea Branch of the Royal Asiatic Society will hold its first semi-monthly Lecture-Meeting of March this Tuesday the 13th, at 7:30 pm, in the 2nd-floor Resident’s Lounge of the Somerset Palace Residence (downtown, near Anguk Station, west of Exit #6; north of Jogye-sa Temple). All in English, for free and open to the public, as always; more info: 763-9483 and www.raskb.com. (includes map for the Somerset, and a complete description of the talk).
This one will be interesting to those of us into recent & current Korean economics and business practices: Mr. Tariq Hussain, who has worked in the Korean business world for a decade and frequently writes about it, will speak on “Brilliance or Breakdown – The Future of Korea Inc.?” – based on his book Diamond Dilemma: Shaping Korea for the 21st Century (recently published in Korean, receiving widespread acclaim and media attention; will be released in English within a few weeks).
Is the Korean miracle over for good? What lessons have been learned from the 1997 financial crisis? Will the “Korean way” transform the country into a vibrant, knowledge-based society – or not? What will decide Korea’s future, and who will play a role in shaping the country? This lecture will provide a profound, provocative and unique outsider’s inside-perspective on the economic challenges and opportunities facing Korea. Make it over there if you can…
