The bottom line is, how bad and real was this sexual slavery thing? What proof and information does everyone have regarding this besides the testimonial of several women who's recollection are confused? As far as I know, there has never been any official papers discovered and the if there were any, the GHQ would not have missed it.

While I don't understand why the U.S. would want to stick it's foot in a problem between Japan and Korea, but if they are going to do so, I hope they do decent research into the matter instead of basing it on one-sided arguments.

A few years from now, I wonder if the U.S. would love hearing "U.S. apologize to Iraq people!" from some government in the Middle East.

I normally enjoy reading your site, Marmot, becasue of your ability to cut through much of the bullshit and get to the issue at hand. The value that you add via this site is your ability to show things as they really are. This takes much local knowledge. So this is why I don't understand why you used this minor news item regarding a liberal Democratic politician to chastise the whole of America.

In this post, you have done what so many of the 386 generation do all the time, including much of the local Korean media: Assume that the words and actions of individual American citizens represent the views of the entire country. Resolutions are introduced on the floor of the House all the time. So how does a so-called "bipartisan" resolution introduced by one Democratic congressman come to be viewed by you as the official position of the Unites States of America on this matter? In some ways, this is no different than the irrational reaction of some Koreans during the 2002 Olympics, who demanded that President Bush and America apologize to Korea for the actions of Apolo Anton Ono.

It would have been far more interesting to look at some of the ironies in this news item. For example, this congressman is of Japanese descent, probably pandering to the emotional sensitivities of the Asian-American vote in Californa.

Marmot, please keep it real and local for I hate to see this site become another fashionable place for the Daily Kos types to spew hateful invectives at the US for any and all reasons.

marka
i sense bitterness and frustration in ur post. u must be american esl teacher or US military officer. i admit foreigners in korea have hard time but u have nobody to blame but urself. u put urself in that position. if u would have study harder in high school and college, u could be teaching english in japan, not korea.
in japan, american esl teacher accpet racism with smile, but in korea, they are disgusted.
marka, i hope u find peace with urself.

Well, I guess everyone is different. However, it strikes me that people in S. Korea who express dissatisfaction with Kim Jong Il still view Kim Il Sung in a positive charismatic light. I hope that it will change.

USinKorea wrote:

<i>"I’ve crossed swords bitterly with Bluejives a few times over the years, but I would never put him in pawi’s category…"</i>

You're right. Bluejives, as I recall, has made negative generalizations about expats in Korea, but he never stooped to the childish insults that have defined pawi's place in the Marmot's Hole.
