I found out what was causing the lag in loading my sidebar—it was Brian’s Latest Comments. Well, Donncha O Caoimh has altered Brian’s Latest Comments to get it to cache, greatly reducing loading time. I set me BLC cache-refresh time to 5 minutes, so don’t be alarmed if your comment doesn’t show up on the sidebar right away. Go download Donncha’s plugin—your Mysql will thank you.

“…I set me [my] BLC cache-refresh time to 5 minutes, so don’t be alarmed if your comment doesn’t show up on the sidebar right away…”
I don’t understand the intricacies of running one of these sites, but I’ve noticed in the past that “post a comment” frequently (though not always) has a “delayed reaction fuse” built in.
If possible, I suggest you make the above quote a standard explanation, one that always shows above/below/near each regular “comment” block (if that’s what you’re referring to when you say the “sidebar”).
I notice also that I can’t see the little gray blocks at the top of “comment” anymore. I guess you got fed up with folks frequently “not closing” them out, which screws things up and require laborious manual correction (?)
Having learned laboriously how to use one of them (the “b-quote”), I’m sorry to see that feature gone. If you ever consider “reviving” them, I again recommend providing a set of instructions on how to use them; I believe that would help considerably.
That’s not a bad idea, although for future reference, the “sidebar” is the thing on the right with my blog list, meta and other crap. I’d also point out that for some odd reason I can’t explain, your comments in particular seem to end up in my “Moderation Box,” requiring me to OK them first before they are posted. I have no idea why that is, other than you might share an IP address with a known spammer/troll.
Actually, I just forgot to download the plugin. I’ll do that a little later. Thanks for reminding me.
I’d guess it was my AOL account and its “ISP” triggers your “moderation box” — except that many times, my comment does appear here immediately. About a 60/40 ratio, at a guess.
I’m using Windows ME too. Perhaps I’m the only commentor here with that particular combination and that’s what is causing the comment to be held (sometimes). Just guesswork though and I’ve learned to work around it in any case.
Thanks for letting me comment. I’ve learned a lot about contemporary Korea here and at some of the other Korea blogs.
# 3 appeared immediately just now, so go figure. Maybe it has something to do with the time of day here in CONUS vs. whatever is going on with your time of day on the other side of the IDL.
