By the Sea . . .

This is a musical post to accompany Robert’s nice thread from the East Sea. Linked is an arrangement of
바닷가 애서 (Beside the Sea), sung by Kim Wonjung and arranged by Ronn Branton from the “Halfmoon” album by Kim Wonjung. Though the CD is made up of Korean children’s songs, many of the songs — [...]

The big Goh bust

As Marmot’s Hole readers already know from Rob’s earlier post, Goh Kun has dropped out of the presidential race. Yonhap has more:
“I anguished a lot and decided not to run in the 2007 presidential election,” Goh said in a statement distributed at his campaign office in Seoul. “I also decided to wrap up my [...]

Colonial era architecture of Yongsan

Hey, a blogger after my own heart.
This Korean blogger walked around Yongsan-gu (where I live) snapping photos of the neighborhood’s colonial era architecture. He also took some cool photos of another Japanese building in Singye-dong that was apparently used as a residence for Japanese railroad workers.
I’d been looking for material like this forever. [...]

‘I don’t remember, but I’m sorry’: U.S. soldier accused of rape

The 23-year-old U.S. soldier accused of raping—repeatedly—a 67-year-old woman in Seoul said during his hearing today that he was too drunk to remember what he did, but if the woman’s testimony is true, he would apologize for everything and pay restitution to the victim. He also said he would get help for an alcohol [...]

(Breaking News) Goh Kun drops from presidential race

Former prime minister Goh Kun announced today—rather shockingly—that he would NOT be running for president in December.
Goh, who was Korea’s best post-Kim Dae-jung president, also announced he would be retiring from politics.
I’m sure Andy Jackson will be breaking down how this affects the presidential race a little later.

Starbucks loses another

People keep pestering me about Starbuck’s trademark problems in Korea. I cannot tell you how many times people who know me and role as a blogger have said “What’s going on in that Starbucks thingy?”  The problem on commenting is twofold. One, my interest in the facts, let alone forming an opinion, is basically nil. [...]

Uljin-gun, Gyeongsangbuk-do

Went to the lovely East Sea town of Uljin-gun, Gyeongsangbuk-do this weekend for a story I’m working on for SEOUL magazine. I’m saving most of the photos for the magazine piece, but I’ll share a couple with you below, along with a couple of short videos.

Film set of SBS drama “Into the Storm.” [...]

GI rapes 67-year old woman? WTF?

A 23-year-old U.S. soldier is under arrest after he was caught by police sexually assaulting a 67-year-old woman in Donggyo-dong, Mapo-gu, Seoul on Sunday.
The soldier was reportedly raping the woman in a residential alleyway at around 6:00 a.m. Sunday when he was spotted by a policeman who happened to be patrolling nearby when he heard [...]

U.S. lawmakers disagree on Seoul trip

U.S. Republican and Democrat lawmakers are apparently at odds over a recent trip by several Congressmen to Seoul partially sponsored by the Korea Foundation.  Personally, I’m not sure what the big deal is, but I hope they enjoyed their stay.

(Breaking News) Seoul pushing intra-Korean summit in 2007?

In a major exclusive, the Hanguk Ilbo is reporting that the government is pushing for a North-South summit meeting within the year.  The paper expects that this might have major repercussions in the coming presidential election at the end of the year.
In a Unification Ministry report to Cheong Wa Dae obtained by the paper, the ministry [...]

(MUST WATCH) Dong-A TV goes to Hooters

The Dong-A Ilbo’s Internet TV unit visits the Apgujeong-dong training ground of Hooters, where Korea’s future Hooters Girls are learning the ropes from experienced American professionals ahead of the Jan. 18 opening of the country’s first Hooters branch.

Public-Service Announcement from the HTML Elf

A note from the HTML Elf: If you open an HTML tag (in particular <a> and <blockquote> tags), you must close the tag! I am tired of fixing these issues. If you don’t know how to use the tags, don’t use them! Every HTML tag, save the line break tag, is opened in brackets, and [...]

Samsung: “We are not impressed”

Surprisingly there was quite a response to the quick post on the slim chances the new Apple iPhone coming to Korea. I appreciate readers for reminding the many problems other than CDMA vs. GSM the phone will have upon a Korean release (I forgot all the barriers Korea erected to promote home grown standards).
Reaction in [...]

Kimchiman video makes SBS

The Youtube video of Kimchiman reciting Arirang made SBS TV News. Said KBS, “It’s true that the comic content is drawing attention, but it also appears that [the video] suggests something to us.”

ROK Special Forces pics becomes overseas story

Hey, look, I wasn’t the only one who thought the ROK Special Forces-snow-bathing photos were cool.

Marmot Unplugged

If you’d like to put a “voice to the blog,” so to speak, Michael has posted his podcast interview with me over at Scribblings of the Metropolitician. Lots of discussion of Korea, blogging and other stuff, so give it a listen.
UPDATE: Do I really sound like Truman Capote?  Not that there’s anything wrong with sounding [...]

Yummy… Cheonggyecheon….

Pic was taken by Newsis at the “Yummy, Yummy! It’s Yummy! Cookie Discovery” exhibition (don’t laugh—that was apparently the official English name, which as goofy as it might sound is not nearly as frightening as the possible implications of its original Korean name—”Yummy, Yummy, Yummy! Cookie Architecture–Nature, Architecture and the Future”) in Seongnam, Gyeonggi-do.

The White Sea Riviera?

This was linked to Naver.com yesterday:

Now, the caption reads that this is a beach near Severodvinsk, which is home of course to Russia’s largest shipyard and the birthplace of boomers like the one above.
What I don’t get is all the people on the beach. This is Severodvinsk, not the Crimea. Is the caption wrong? Is [...]

Our Nerve Tonics are Better than Yours

In you another sign the FTA is really dead, another group with nothing to lose and everything to gain is protesting against the pact. In this case its the Korean Oriental Medical Practitioners who are worried about US certifications for similar work being recognized in Korea. Of course there is no such similar certification in [...]

First It Was Farming Rice and Now It Is Gold

Now with the threat of a housing price collapse, South Korean gamers now need to worry that their online in-game transactions may become illegal. Some players of online games engage in a bit of “gold farming”, where they acquire items that have value within a virtual game world and resale such for real-world money. There [...]
