(NOTICE) Database overhall overhaul

Sorry for the interruption—I intentionally shut down the blog to work on the database. What I thought would be a quick job is taking much longer. Anyway, this blog may be on and off during the weekend as we conduct some much needed work. Apologies to the readers in advance.

Cyber-terrorism a national disgrace?

The Korea Times on cyber-assault: “Nothing, however, could be as serious_and fatal_as the barrage of verbal abuses and character assassinations posted on the Web, mainly targeting celebrities. People who post these attacks, if and when they lead to victims’ deaths, are murderers and they should be punished as such.”

Your tax money at work

A decade of Sunshine and the number of undernourished North Koreans has doubled?

There goes the neighborhood, I guess: fuzzy foreigners to top 1 million in 2007

The Maeil Gyeongje reports that Korea is on the express train to a multi-ethnic society, with the number of foreigners in the country expected to top 1 million this year and reach a whopping 9.1 million by 2050:
Korea’s streets are filling up with foreigners.  According to the authorities, there were some 891,000 foreigners residing in [...]

Up in Smoke

The long standing suit of thirty-two lung cancer patients against KT&G (Korean Tobacco and Ginseng) has been decided against the thirty-two plantiffs, after seven years of legal wrestling in court.
Apparently, the judges in the case decided that there was not enough evidence to link the plantiff’s cancer to smoking, however the judges seem to [...]

Princeton parody

This is interesting—you can get into Princeton and still be a dumb ass.

Yankabroad unplugged

Don’t hold back, Mr. Ruffin—tell us what you really think.

I have a very good friend named Biggus Dickus

Sometimes it pays to be blissfuly unaware of Korean entertainment. Who knew a man using the name “Twist Kim” had nothing to do with the porn industry.

Blog update/facelift

OK, things are pretty much back to normal here.
Rather than overwrite the files when I updated, I deleted the whole thing (with the exception of the config file, of course) and uploaded the new Wordpress files. I also made sure to update ALL the plugins.
And since I was cleaning house, I took the opportunity [...]

What does it take to make a political party in Korea?

With all this talk these days about folks leaving , creating and merging parties, a commenter sensibly asked: how many folks it would take to legally create a party?  That is a good question indeed.
SHORT ANSWER:  5,000 (or 1,000 if you only want a local party).
LONG ANSWER:  A quick search at the National Election Commission gives us [...]

Updating again

I’m going to retry the update—this time doing it the “long way.”  Hopefully this will fix some of the issues the blog has been experiencing.  The blog might be down for a couple of minutes.
UPDATE: OK, the system has been “cleaned out,” so to speak.  It’ll take a couple of hours to get things looking [...]

KORUS FTA, Worth taking it to the streets?

I ran across an interesting little factoid in Korea Times about a seemingly unrelated matter “When asked whether it is better to live in equality though being a little worse off, 43.7 percent [of students] said yes while 34 percent said no.” Food for thought for anybody thinking an FTA is a simple as explaining [...]

Condom Sales drop as couples try to make pigs

In the latest proof that the Hankyoreh is developing into a true rival of the Chosun Ilbo, it has this piece that would be right at home with some of the tabloid crap that the Chosun puts out for our enjoyment.
It seems that condom sales are down at several retailers this year. The Hanky says [...]

Blusumer?

Konglish Alert: Comming to an English Langauge presentation near you “Attack of the Ubiquitous Blusumer“

North Korea on Mapo-gu GI granny rape

Well, you knew Pyongyang was going to have something to say (HT to Lost Nomad):
NORTH Korea today described US soldiers serving in South Korea as “infected with an abnormal sexual desire” and said sexual abuse was part of their daily routine. The ruling party’s newspaper Rodong Sinmun was commenting on the alleged rape by a US [...]

The first rat to leave the Uri ship

Uri Party leaders already said last month they were going to form a new party as early as January 29.
I guess that is not soon enough for some (Korea Herald):
Rep. Im Jong-in, a first-term lawmaker, resigned from the Uri Party yesterday in what political observers see as the start of a series of high-profile defections from the [...]

OK, maybe that wasn’t so painless

Since making the jump to WP 2.1, I’ve been plagued all day with account suspensions due to high resource demand. Anyone else experiencing this since updating?
UPDATE: I believe it was the photo album plugin that was farging things up. I’ve disabled it and things appear to be running better, but let me know [...]

Fun with Statistics - More Prime Beef

There seems to be a rather large responce given to the ILO article stating Korea pays the most for beef. I thought I would add some quick stats to round out the scope. First lets take a look at the rankings for beef prices per kilogram as cited in the article:

Korea $56.44
Japan $40.50
Italy $10.36
UK [...]

Now that’s hot

Who needs Hooters when you’ve got the North Koreans?

The humanity…
