People who complain about violence in the media are acting under the assumption that the idea of violence, transmitted to their children by the media, begets violence. It is as if they think ignorance prevents problems.

Who thinks that this is true? I don't, not really. Knowledge of violence creates... knowledge of violence. The kid still has to make the choice to use violence or not.

"The book had a small R-rated warning, but my daughter didn't pay attention to that"

Actually, it's the parent who didn't pay attention to what her daughter was reading.

My favorite essay about what these fairy tales were "really" like, back in the day, was in Robert Darton's The Great Cat Massacre. If you go to the Amazon website I linked to, you can read about 10 pages of the fairy tale chapter from the book (under "excerpts").

Nifty... Of course, seeing as how these 'wholesome' tales were substantially cleaned up in modern times, one could argue that the kids in Korea are returning them to their roots. ;)
