Quoting Der Spiegel, Pop News is reporting that North Korean diplomats have approached a German rabbit farmer about possibly setting up large-scale rabbit farms in the Workers Paradise. The farmer in question has grown rabbits that weigh up to 10 kg, roughly the weight of a Cocker Spaniel.

This Deutscher may be a hoax, but the notion that enough rabbits can be bred to feed the starving NORK minions is an old and recurrent one; KJP has been behind such schemes in the past. The problem is where to find enough forage to fatten up the rabbits. When you’re as desperate as the NORKS are, you’d be predisposed to be credulous about anything that promised a lot of meat for a little roughage input.

pretty much breaks a law in science. How can you get so much meat from nothing? The rabbits have to eat. Eat a lot. You can’t get something from nothing. Might as well grow pigs. Pigs eat anything. Even their own excrement. And they’ll grow hideously large. Sure, you’ll get tapeworms, too.
Growing any kind of animal for meat usually means you’re sacrificing, by feeding these animals grain, or sacrificing other grazing land that could have been used for other crops you can eat yourself.
The notion that you can feed more people in 3rd world countries by getting them to eat more meat than grain is absurd. In a large scale, land is better used to produce grain and crops, rather than animals. In the US, there is so much leftover grain, it is possible to feed animals and eat animals for a relatively cheap price.
This is like Marie Antoinette, telling the people to eat was it cake or meat? when French officials told her that people were rioting because they didn’t have bread to eat.
North Korea can be fed properly and quickly like turning on a dime, if the US govt decides to unleash ships and ships full of grain that’s otherwise just sitting in silos in the midwest.
Stuff that US farmers are given subsidies to produce. Leftovers.
Problem is, Kim Jong Il will take it, feed troops, and sell the grain, and buy weapons or luxury items.

I kind of agree with WJK (#7). The availability of meat in the diet of common people is a sure sign of relative prosperity (A chicken in every pot and all that.).
only partially true, my friend. obviously, Kim Jongil is dabbling in alchemy. the law of equal exchange could produce a 10 kilo rabbit from a pile of radioactive dirt provided he’s managed to train or kidnap a skilled alchemist recently.

BTW, has anyone out there tried Korean 토끼탕? I was told at the Folk Village in Yongin that Koreans did traditionally eat rabbit, and I have seen a restaurant advertising he dish, but couldn’t convince my wife to go in and try it with me. Correct me if I’m wrong, but my guess is that it’s heavily flavored with wild sesame, like some of Korea’s other “wild” stews (Goat soup, potato soup, dog soup, etc).
When I was growing up in northern Canada, I did a bit of hare-snaring with my Dad. They don’t taste too bad, but the ones we got were a lot of work for such little meat.
According to this BBC article, these big bunnies eat 2kg of lettuce a day. I would imagine there are a lot of North Koreans who could put that lettuce to better use.

It should also be pointed out that food aid has also been misused to undermine domestic producers, thus exacerbating the food problem. The real problem in most food troubled countries are systemic problems of poor governance, corruption, and horrible political/economic systems, of which North Korea is a prime example.

Things I just learned. Rabbits would probably be beneficial for North Korea as they can be fed commercial feed. And breeding rabbits as livestock is called “Cuniculture”.

Hoax or not, but this is very NK. First, they experimented with rabbits since the late 1950s (than the KIS University faculty spent a lot of time at a university rabit farm, and when the University president said something critical about this, he lost his job). Second, their approach to economy, especially agriculture, is very much technology-driven. Nothing bad about it, but they tend to beleive that there is some magic wonder technology which can change everything and make them prosperous. Just right technology. They’ve tried quite a few “wonder technologies”, nothing worked so far. But they keep trying.
The largest rabbit known is Roberto at 33 lbs, until recently he weighed in at 27 lbs. Herman a young 2 year old rabbit weighs in at 17 lbs and his photo has been verified by the New York Post.

The only way I’d be interested in donating surplus food to the Norks is if we took Sam Kinison’s advice from Gulf War I and dropped pallets of it from 25,000 feet. I don’t know anyone who’s ever got any of that ‘free education’ that people like to think natives get. The only guy I know who ever got anything received a one time 300$ scholarship from the Canadian government because his mom grew up on the res. He paid more than that in taxes every week during the summer because he lived off the reserve.
