(Two Must Reads) OK, time for some serious posts now

The first one, brought to my attention by Kimchee GI, is an editorial by Dr. Sheila M. Jager posted on the Strategic Studies Institute of the U.S. Army War College reflecting on lessons from Korea that might be applied to U.S. efforts to build Iraq’s security forces from the ground-up. Read it in its [...]

English Teacher: The Movie?

Is this for real? Here’s the film’s synopsis:
Patrick, a young American college grad, journeys to Seoul, South Korea to teach English. Jeff, a friend-of-a-friend, puts him up in his filthy, little apartment and finds him a job teaching Yoon Hee, a university student from a prosperous family. There is an easy chemistry between them, [...]

North Korean nudes for human rights and Jesus?

Yonhap reports a 41-year old female North Korean defector identified as Ms. A has sparked controversy in South Korea by posing for nude photos uploaded onto the Internet.
The site, reportedly run by North Korean defector Mr. B, discusses North Korean human rights issues, including the ongoing famine. It has also uploaded nude photos of [...]

Nice golf shoes

I feel kinda bad for Pak Se-ri, making her stand in the back.

Cart Rider Deluxe

Do-it-yourself (DYI) culture is common enough in Korea but this latest example seems to pay homage to “Cart Rider” (the Korean version of “Super Mario Cart”), the game that has defined the leisure hours of many kids here in Korea. If anyone really knows anything else about this picture, please add suitable commentary. This came [...]

Jeju English Town?

I think it’s important for students to learn foreign languages, but man, this is getting downright ridiculous.

Foreigners in Busan busted for ‘anti-Korean’ performance

Police in Busan have booked nine foreigners in Busan for putting on an unapproved performance that allegedly degraded Korean culture, reports the Kyunghyang Shinmun.
The paper noted that they were booked (but not detained) on procedural grounds (you must seek permission from authorities before holding a performance), but controversy was expected since it was possible police [...]

Girl, You’ll Be A Woman Soon

Moon Geun-young? Sexy? Well, at least KTF waited until she was legal…

Chinese standoff

I’m sure you’ve seen this, but in case you didn’t, police on Tuesday night engaged in an eight-and-a-half-hour standoff with a car with Chinese Embassy plates whose driver refused a breathalyser test. See also here.

Please Don’t Eat the Humping Dog

This little USB gadget is cute and would be a tasty computer accessory for the Korean geek on the go. Now one can store data and think of a tasty dog treat at the same time.

Kim Jong-il gives Castro a going away present

Not that Castro will notice, but he has been honored by Pyongyang (Gramma Internacional):
THE Presidium of the Supreme People’s Assembly of the People’s Democratic Republic of Korea has awarded President Fidel Castro with the Golden Medal (Hammer and Sickle) and the First Class Order of the National Flag.
The decorations were received yesterday by Esteban Lazo, vice president of [...]

Oh, no, not the “no foreigners in the sauna” thing!

Foreigners have apparently gotten a rude welcome in the town of Pocheon northeast of Seoul, reports the Korea Times.
Of course, American-born Japanese David Aldwinckle launched his activist career with this sort of thing in Otaru, Japan.
My all-time favorite example of this was back in 2003 when brothels in Mia-ri, blaming increasing numbers of foreign laborers [...]

Pyeongtaek move to be delayed 5 years? WTF?

A government source told Yonhap that it looks like transfer of the U.S. garrison at Yongsan to Pyeongtaek, originally scheduled to take place in 2007, would be delayed by five years to late 2013.
A source from one of the related government ministries said the possibility of completing the transfer by 2008 as scheduled was currently [...]

Sign Letter Demanding Apology from KBS

Michael over at Scribblings of the Metropolitician has posted an online petition calling for KBS to issue an apology over this nonsense.
Please, give it a sign.

N. Koreans not our problem: Seoul human rights watchdog

The National Human Rights Commission decided today that it would NOT look into human rights abuses occurring in North Korea (English piece here).
The commission said it could not view North Koreans as “natives,” taking into account domestic and international law and how Seoul lacks effective jurisdiction over the North.
It based its decision on a) [...]

Sometimes the Notes Are Not the Music

Sometimes Japanese music fans are really cool in a special way. I hope Korean fans catch this wave . . .

Ain’t a bad number

The headline of the day—”Koreans’ Happiness Index 69“

Finally, film stuff I can appreciate

Mr. Skin has selected the top 10 nude scenes of 2006, and just to prove there really is a God, Salma Hayek earned the top spot. The No. 4 spot went to Bai Ling, who I kinda dig despite her being something of a freak… or perhaps because she’s something of a freak.

The Revolution Will Be Televised on Your Handphone

As could be expected, five members of a North Korean spy ring have been caught and are now to be prosecuted. Per the Joongang Ilbo:
Prosecutors said yesterday that a South Korean espionage group had received instructions from North Korea by e-mail and infiltrated the far-left Democratic Labor Party and liberal civic groups to [...]
