At another debate on eradicating prostitution, this one held yesterday at the National Assembly Library, former prostitutes spoke of the “shocking” conditions under which they had to live, reported the Munhwa Ilbo.
One ex-working girl going by the alias of “Sarang” noted that pimps would pay off high officials with free services and monetary bribes. The woman said the men she had to bribe sexually included police, prosecutors, lawmakers and city officials. She noted, however, that because these men were concerned with their image, they would not go to hotels, but rather conclude their business at their “officetels” (”office” + “hotel”) and the like.
With cops, it was even better. Rather than cracking down on prostitution, they were instead demanding sexual payments. In fact, “Sarang” said she often went on police station picnics in the morning, something that was particularly difficult given how—given the nature of her profession—she’d be up all night working.
Another ex-working girl named “Daisy” said that it was easier to deal with manual laborers who, like herself presumably, worked hard for their money, rather than johns of higher social standing, who often refused to pay her for her services.
And then there are the perverts.
One woman said one guy would send her into the bathroom, where he would instruct her to moan while he jerked off outside. Sometimes, he would leave the bathroom door open and enjoy watching her moan. Another guy with unique tastes liked for her to spit into the coffee he ordered.
Whatever happened to just calling up a dabang (tea house) for a simple coffee and a screw?
Anyway, prostitutes apparently classify 15 acts as “perverted,” including (get your pencils and notepads, children, because this will be on the test):
- Demanding a refund while threatening to turn the girls into the cops;
- Demanding a refund several times more than what he paid by claiming “psychological damage”;
- Burglarizing the girl’s room;
- Using violence;
- Pissing on the bed, claiming the service wasn’t satisfactory;
- Insisting on anal sex;
- Sticking strange devices up their vaginas;
- Harassing the girls by pretending to be civil servants;
- Demanding group sex;
- Visiting red light districts looking for “spring chickens”;
- Using cell phones to take pictures during sex.
An official from an Incheon women’s group said more and more people are criticizing prostitutes and claiming that prostitution is a necessary evil. She said to eradicate prostitution, men who solicit the services of prostitutes need to reform their “two-faced” understanding of prostitution and be strongly punished.
Personally, I think the government’s efforts to eradicate prostitution are bound to be as effective as U.S. efforts to bring democracy to Iraq—after three years in Iraq and two years since the passing of the Special Law on Prostitution, we should probably see by now that both are futile endeavors to graft alien values onto societies that don’t appear to accept them. Heck, laws on prostitution hardly work even in the United States, which—culturally speaking—seems much more uptight (and dare I say hypocritical) about this sort of thing.
That being said, it would probably be much funner to be an “embedded” reporter covering the War on Prostitution…

This is a problem more of economics than morality. The level of prostitution in Korea is (apparently) through the roof because women have so few job options and are poorly paid. You wouldn’t eradicate prostitution by developing more employment opportunities for women, but I think you’d curtail it to a great degree. Also, if law enforcement was actually practiced here instead of fake “crackdowns” it would make a big difference.
Robert, you are beginning to remind me of J. Swift and his satire . . .
It is difficult to determine if this is more a failure of the law enforcement system of a failure of social values, however it would be better if there was an honest and earnest effort towards law enforcement than what there is now.
Considering such and the other news topics, it is enough to worry one about the future of this good country and its serious lack of leadership — both politically and ethically.
I remember a few years back there was a big “crackdown” in Calgary on prostitution.They passed a law to confiscate the cars of “Johns” caught picking up hookers.The funny thing was, the “Johns” started picking up the hookers on bicycles.
this is one step forward, away from Japanese culture.
Hey, if some guy’s gonna claim that King Sejong taught the Japanese about a comfort women system, I can claim this is one step forward away from Japanese culture.
I believe, correctly, that a few of the “pervert” list actions are learnable from Japanese videos.

Historical exhibit A.
It’s Japanese culture.
Yup, it be the fault of Japan. And, as such, those Koreans who are partaking in this behavior are subsequently absolved of their guilt and are no longer disgusting perverts. Just like the Korean war-criminals who were declared innocent by a Korean court.
That Hokusai print is really beautiful WJK–and has nothing to do with prostitution.
I do enjoy how any conversation about the (wrongly) perceived faults of Korea with a Korea invariably ends in a conversation about evil Japan.
But the fact is that there is a qualitative differences in talking about general prostitution and this issue, which is members of government and the civil service abusing women in a very serious way.
Should be “with a Korean”, not, “with a korea” of course.
Michael from France said: “This is a problem more of economics than morality. The level of prostitution in Korea is (apparently) through the roof because women have so few job options and are poorly paid. ”
Tell me about it. My wife (Korean) just got turned down for a job. She was told that all other qualifications were fine but our daughter was too young. Go figure. Apparently women with young children are somehow bad employees. What would you do if you were a single Mom? There might not be many options…
No wonder the birthrate in Korea is so low now.
Only took until post 5 this time!
wjk—You know, of course, Korea has its own proud history of erotic art… although granted, I’ve yet to see Korean examples of muff-diving marine products.
It’s still a man’s world in Korean business–women are expected to quit when they get pregnant, even though there are laws on maternal leave. In fact, women are expected to quit when they marry. Look at middle management at most Korean companies, it’s a boy’s club all the way.

In that environment it’s not too surprising women go into “entertainment” to make a living. And it’s all Japan’s fault, of course. And Bu$shie’s fault.
Must be how the Bond film title was inspired….Octopussy
When I was living in a study-hall for a brief time, I saw many young women living a tough life. They did not have key money and were mostly working full time hours for various reasons. Saw one girl drop her noodles and saw her burst into tears (And for Pete’s sake, yes I would have bought her a meal but I was afraid it would have made more embarassed). Whole floors shared shower facilities and just rows of sad sullen faces in a miserable crappy place. I was never sympathetic to prostitution before and I certainly don’t condone it but I can see why a girl might make that choice. My gut feeling tells me that overall, Korea’s level of prostitution has died down in the last twenty years. This may simply be that the level of young girls are leveling off. No statistics to back that statement–just a sense I get, but I think I’m right.
The numbers have not changed; they have been driven into the suburbs away from the crack-down areas. Crack-down……..nice pun if you will.
Mr. Koehler, that was very educational, but the latter half of your statement is very important also. Thank you.
I’m inclined to agree with Michael that this is more about economics than culture. But doesn’t the materialism of Korean culture (materialism that puts America’s to shame) have something to do with it? During the last crackdown on prostitution - or was it the second last? there’ve been so many - a Korean documentary program had a young woman on it who said that she was working as a whore because she desperately wanted a Rolex. The self-pimping of high school girls too is generally attributed to a desire for brand goods.
I may get shot by the Korean women groups for this, but instead of trying to crack down on prostitution why not legalize it like Germany?
The recent “crackdown” has shown the futility of trying to eradicate prostitution, so won’t legalizing and regulating prostitution, be more effective in ensuring that the sex industry won’t turn more ugly?
At the least, it may help reduce the number of big shots asking for bribes in exchange for ensuring that the businesses stay open.
But unfortunately, legalizing prostitution won’t keep away the perverts.
I just get a smile thinking about a “perverted fantasy”.
There must be a high level of job satisfaction amongst city officials, police, and those in the legal profession since this special law went into effect.
Having said that, I think it’s safe to say we are much closer to pulling out of our war in Iraq than the Koreans are to pulling out of their
whorewar on prostitution.Don’t forget to piss on the bed, then spank yourself.
Serious time now…
One side of this debate often ignored is the demand side of the equasion. The Men are just as cupible for the problem as the girls.
It has always morbidly amused me how men (me included) could go to say a strip club, yet would never want their daughters to work in one. If you do not think an innocent child should grow up to deliver instant coffee and blowjobs, why do you support such a system with your orders.
Er go, I have always wondered if ancedotes of teenage whores working for Gucci bags or the stripper lap dancing her way through medical school is a bromide peddled by men so they can ignore what they really are supporting on average.
Yeah, but Dram Man, the likelihood that high school students in Seoul are pimping themselves online in order to still their stomachs or get a roof over their head strikes me as very low. It certainly does look like it’s to earn discretionary income, whether it’s spent on Gucci bags or not.
Yes, They do it for the fun money
I personally blame Japan and America for most of Korea’s modern problems. It could never be the Koreans fault for something like this.
Of course it is the fault of Japan and America. Koreans are lilly white
None of this would have happened if the USA hadn’t prevented unification in 1950. The blood of the 5000 year old Dokdo schoolgirls cries out for justice!
wjk,
Okay, we already know that you watch way too much Japanese porn. lol
Shame on you!
The article is talking about Korean authorities’ power harrassment, but you can’t help but move into “this is Japan’s influence/fault” stream, can you.
Why can’t you just face the fact that your (ethnic) country is messed up in places and condemn it for what it is, instead of blaming others?
Leaning on that comfortable “Japan’s fault” crtuch won’t get your country in better shape. The dads and brothers of Korea need to wake up!
Well, in regards to the efforts of government to stop or curtail this I don’t think it has anything to do with government. It’s society that allows it and fosters it and furthers it through government corruption. That’s what democracy is and so far the democracy here has said that it isn’t important enough to enough people to change it. Same shit in the S+tates and in Europe and in Japan. If people wanted it changed it would be, but it ain’t changing so, guess what?
As far as the condom thing, once enough Korean men have a catheter shoved up their pecker to unclog the pipes or go a couple days feeling like a fire erupts every time you piss, they’ll start double-bagging that shit of their own volition. Or, just show pictures in high school classes of men with gential worts; that’ll work wonders as a scare tactic.
AIDS is the problem. They go cat around in SE Asia and then bring the bug back to Korea.
But RJ’s list left out the #1 most despised sexual perversion,as reported by polled hookers:
-demanding to be able to pay in NORTH KOREAN WON.
It’s all the damn Japs’ fault; it’s all the damn Japs’ fault
From ubiquitous whores to bird flu spores
It’s all the damn Japs’ fault!
It’s all because of the Japs; it’s all because of the Japs
From the price of salt to that Juche cult
It’s all because of the Japs!
Twas the Japs who started this; twas the Japs who started this
The way we eat dog-meat, the way we love to wife-beat
Twas the Japs who started this!
Many of the “perverted” acts on the list are in fact violence against women, predicated on the fact that they are vulnerable since their profession is unlawful. Legalization of prostitution takes away the sword of Damocles — if you complain about what horrid thing I’ve done to you, you will suffer legal consequences — and that would do wonders to shape up the behavior of the clients.
LMFAO Montclaire–I was picturing a Gilbert and Sullivan opera, like the Korean version of “The Mikado.”
There you go, Michael. You write the tunes, we’ll take it to Broadway.
