Korean Policy looses to…er….Korean Policy?

I have not been deaf the past few months. I have been researching a post or series on the whole Lone Star mess. The problem is a combination of my work in general, and the fact my personal reaction is “Whadda’ gonnna’ do?”. Anyway expect something weightier on the topic sooner or later.
Meanwhile in the [...]

Political economy of sanctions on North Korea

In the fall issue of Asian Perspective, the journal of Kyungnam University’s Institute of Far Eastern Studies, Ruediger Frank discusses the political economy of sanctions on North Korea.
Come on, now… you know you wanna read it.

Lone Star scraps KEB deal, prosecutor calls Financial Times big, fat liars

Lone Star, pissed off over ongoing investigations into the company’s dealings, is terminating its deal to take over Korea Exchange Bank.
Clearly, the bank is guilt—look at that photo of chairman John Grayken. Mischievous… very mischievous.
Anyway, the Korea Times has a ton of stuff on the Lone Star decision. Some of the highlights are:

Former [...]

Well, if Kim Il-sung said so…

At a forum hosted by the National Unification Advisory Council, Dr. Han S. Park of the University of Georgia said U.N. sanctions on North Korea were a complete failure and that North Korea would eventually give up its nuclear weapons. Why would they give ‘em up, you might ask?
“First is that even if it [...]

Tehran, Damascus, Baghdad… and Seoul?

This makes total sense, but at the same time, doesn’t:
The United States should not misinterpret or be surprised when South Korea responds differently on North Korean issues because Seoul’s national interests are different, a senior U.S. congressman said Wednesday.
Rep. Peter Hoekstra (RMichigan), chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, drew parallels between South Korea and developments [...]

Concerned Citizen Alerts Police to Possible Bomb on Train

I have often rode the trains in Korea and wondered about the National Railroad’s measures to prevent terrorism.  Although the possibility of terrorism on Korea’s railroad is relatively remote - I do remember in the past there were terrorist alerts and many of the trash cans/bins on the trains were removed so that bombs could [...]

President Roh tells fans 2ID redeployment was his idea

According to the Chosun Ilbo, President Roh Moo-hyun had some interesting things to say in an August 27 conversation with Gwangju/Jeollanam-do members of Nosamo, the president’s online fan club.
One of the members secretly recorded the conversation. The 55-minute recording file was posted on the Nosamo homepage yesterday.
Firstly, he said there were no “red warning [...]

North, South agree to add Dokdo to unity flag

You’ll be happy to know that despite the chill (maybe) that has overcome intra-Korean ties in the wake of Pyongyang’s nuclear test, the two Koreas have agreed to add the Dokdo islets to the “Korean Peninsula flag,” or hanbando-gi, which is used during intra-Korean events.
North Korea had been placing Dokdo on their version of the [...]

I say, blame the doenjangnyeo for Lexus prices

Toyota is being accused of employing a dual pricing system with its Lexus luxury-car brand, selling the vehicles for much higher prices here than in the United States.
The Lexus ES350, for example, is over twice as expensive here than in the United States, the Korean Times reports.
The phenomenon is being blamed on a) Toyota and [...]

Oh, those witty farmers

When they are not writing in a foreign language, those protestors can be quite clever:

Of course, some prefer to dispense with the “bull”  and go with the nice and direct approach:

North Korea would appreciate the imagery.

Netizens furious at bitchy ‘Embassy Girl’ who turned away POW defector

Korea’s online community is working itself into an outrage over the outrageous manner in which a female staffer at the South Korean embassy in Beijing treated Korean War POW Chang Mu-hwan when he called for help after escaping from North Korea in 1998.
Give a listen to the conversation via YTN.
The Foreign Ministry, meanwhile, says the [...]

Miss Asia wardrobe malfunction

The Hong Kong tabloids seem to be having a good ol‘ time with Korean Lee Ye-bin’s exposed booby during the Miss Asia contest.

Cindy Sheehan in Korea

Any idea why she’s waving around the passport in front of the bsae?

Hyehwa-dong’s hanok office

Seoul’s Hyehwa-dong has opened up the country’s first Korean-style dong office.

The hanok itself was built in the 1940s. Jongno-gu bought it in 2004 and remodeled it for use as a dong office.
I hope this isn’t the only one of its kind for long.  Here’s a story with a map if you need it.

Weekly Chosun on Korea’s 14,000 foreign English teachers

The Weekly Chosun magazine ran a piece on Korea’s foreign English teacher community.
Seoul’s Department of Education recently said it would place native-English-speaking assistant teachers in all Seoul elementary and middle schools by September of 2008. The Department of Education, meanwhile, plans to increase the number of native-speaking assistant teachers from 1,183 (last year) to 2,900 [...]

Why Roh is unpopular and Goh will lose

There are a couple of interesting political pieces out I want to share.
The first is from the Hankyoreh (yes, I read the Hanky) on Roh lost the support of his base.  Many of the ‘386 generation’ have turned against him.  The final straw seems to be his failed real estate policies, which have caused problems [...]

Russia builds dike on traditionally Korean territory of Nokdun-do

The Dong-A Ilbo has belatedly learned that Russian authorities built a flood-control levee on the Tumen River island (?) of Nokdun-do on the North Korea-Russia border.
The Russians apparently built the 13 km dike in July of last year as part of a flood-control project with North Korea. They are now reinforcing parts of it that [...]

Korean HR commission threatens to take away pretty young flight attendants

Fresh from critical debates about employment rights of drug addicts and teachers having their student write journals, The National Human Rights Commission of Korea has decided that Korean flight attendants are not old enough (Chosun):
Asiana and Korean Air’s policy of hiring women crewmembers that are no older than 25 years has been condemned as unreasonable [...]
