Time to stock up on kimchi

Yep, it’s official—we have an outbreak of a highly virulent form of the bird flu in Iksan.

Luckily, we here in Korea have the miracle drug—kimchi, good against not only the bird flu, but also SARS, the Black Death and Captain Trips.

I was looking forward to eating ‘Kyochon Chicken’ on my visit to Korea this winter, but now my hope is no more!!!

No prob actually — even if a chicken does have the flu, the meat from it is quite safe if it’s thoroughly cooked. And anyway, this is not the type of bird flu that will easily jump to humans…

And yes, eat your kimchi along with the chicken; despite the ridicule over exaggerated claims, it does contain some vitamin C and antioxidant enzymes that will give your body a slight boost in its fight against invading microbes.

A final note — it’s jarring to see “Captain Trips” as the name of a deadly disease here, i’d never heard that it was used that way in that novel — as any of us old-line Deadheads can tell you, it was an early nickname for Jerry Garcia, declared on the GD’s first album in 1967 — he later came to really hate it, as every hack journalist writing about the band turned it into a meaningless cliche…

Aw shucks! I just ate two back-of-truck diesel chickens. Hopefully them exhaust vapors that smoke the birds kill off the virus.
