So lets see Koreans forced into the military by Imperial Japan, are PoW guards. How about blaming Japan? They are the ones who started the war.

Hell you want someone to blame, blame yourselves for giving Japan the weapons.

This is just retarded American whining.

Americans always seem to be getting away with War Crimes but always condem others. WHY IS THIS? American Culture is all about avoiding Responsibitility and blaming others. Seeming righteous but dirty schemeing individuals with plots for power. NO GUN RI is perfect example of not accepting the blame. US military guys rape or molest Japanese girls...thats also kept quiet. In Iraq many more tortures...How long will this go on??? Why is America never held responsible?? Always pointing the finger at others. Its why there are so many Law suits in America. ITs a culture of blaming others, doing evil things and covering it up. Then puffing out their chest and trying to look like the good guys and proud. Look at Enron, Look at this Subprime bull shit. All caused by US>. Sure someone will read my comment and then make some retort. Sure...without even accepting what I am even saying to begin with. WHEN WILL THE US EVER SAY SORRY AND ACCEPT RESPONSIBILITIES FOR ITS WRONG DOINGS. There are soooooo many WAR CRIMINALS in the US.

[...] I guess I should give these students a break because maybe they didn’t understand which answers to give on this test because you have real history and than you have the revised history of the Korean government that revises unpleasant aspects of Korean history such as Korean war criminals during World War II. Does the student answer the actual number or the revised number only accepted by the Korean government? Actually I would be impressed if the students even knew Korea had war criminals during World War II to begin with. Just think if they asked a question about who was responsible for the Gwangju Uprising how many different answer they would get. The politicization of Korean history by politicians for their own short term political advantage is what is responsible for so many competing theories of Korean history. Not to mention the North Korean fifth column interested in rewriting history in order to give a more sympathetic and positive view of North Korea while at the same time exploiting issues in order to drive a wedge between the US and the general Korean public which they have had much success at. Unfortunately I don’t see this trend changing any time soon.
[...] There is some interesting debate going on over at the Marmot’s Hole over a Korean Government’s Truth CommissionTM report absolving 83 World War II war criminals of Korean ethnicity that served with the Imperial Japanese military. The Marmot’s Hole has since posted a follow up report concerning well noted Korean scholar and author Michael Breen’s response to this report: If the Truth Commission wants to get its moral bearings straight and live up to its name, it should examine the broader assumptions with which it is approaching its mission to resolve the pain of the past. In doing so, it should recognize that the idea that Koreans were all unhappy citizens of imperialism bar a few collaborators is a myth. Koreans were Japanese citizens, and it did not occur to many to support the allies against their own country. Ask anyone who lived in that period, and they will tell you that the political correctness of the post-colonial generation is distorted. [...]

[...] The fact that Onishi takes Roh’s interest in history or human rights at face value, especially in light of this, is yet another reason to view Roh’s legacy with more skepticism than Onishi will. In the Roh era, interpretations of history and human rights have been reliably selective because both are merely a means to an end. Nor does Onishi mention Roh’s studied disinterest in either safeguarding free speech (1, 2, 3, 4, 5), defending a free press (1, 2, 3, 4, 5), or promoting human rights (1, 2) in the present tense. Onishi has written an opinion piece disguised as news, a thinly veiled apologia for the unconditional appeasement of a regime that, under Roh’s care and feeding, continued to set new lows for belligerence and oppression. In the end, however, there’s no disguising this awful legacy Roh has made for himself, even by the low standards of South Korea, where presidents are generally responding to indictments at this stage of their tenure. Roh’s unpopularity should make George W. Bush count his blessings. [...]

Good point, how much clout does this Truth Commission have when it comes to a judicial reckoning on the actions of these men? One would hope none at all.

Little or none would be my guess. After all, these people were not convicted in a Korean court, so it doesn't seem like a South Korean government commission could unilaterally overturn any convictions. Of course, even if the actions of this 'truth commission' have little or no actual legal effect, it could have quite a bit of influence as propaganda and historical revisionism.

Good point, how much clout does this Truth Commission have when it comes to a judicial reckoning on the actions of these men? One would hope none at all. If you need any more insight into the victimhood complex at work in the Truth Commission's findings, go no further than Pawi's rantings. How, exactly, is this "an internal" Korean matter, when the victims were all foreign? For the record, I don't believe Koreans are knowingly racist. But you can bet London to a brick that if the Australian/British/US government had exhonerated their own citizens of such crimes against Korean nationals, the peninsula would seethe with outrage/trading boycott calls/online attacks on web pages of offending nation.

[...] Via the Marmot (here and here), the Korean government Truth Commission on Forced Mobilization under the Japanese Imperialism has cleared 83 of 148 Koreans convicted by the Allies of war crimes during World War II. On what grounds? Turns out the Koreans were victims of Japanese imperialism, suffering the “double pain” of forced mobilization and becoming a war criminal. [...]
