What did Uncle Genghis ever do to you?

by Robert Koehler on November 12, 2006

OK, I understand some non-Mongolians have “issues” with Genghis Khan and some of the , ahem, peackeeping operations he led during his rule, but Jesus, no man deserves this:

That would the the German group, Dschinghis Khan. I actually remember seeing them perform on TV in the early 80′s.

“Moskau, Moskau, werft die Gläser an die Wand, Rußland ist ein schönes Land, ha-ha-ha-ha-ho-hej!”

“Moscow, Moscow, throw your glasses against the wall, Russia is a beautiful country, ha-ha-ha-ho-hey!”

Oh yeah, I remember Dschinghis Khan as the leader of Der Deutches Wave that swept the world.

Marmot – you owe me 3 minutes and 7 seconds of my life back.

My major was Asian Studies, and let me tell you that THAT was exactly the dance he did when he strung the entrails of his political enemies around the camp.

I tell not a lie.

All I have to hear is three notes to get myself mentally jerked back to Anjeong-ni, 1978. Does anyone (God forbid) remember “Boney-M” and/or that horrible “Hello Mr. Monkey” song?

Dirtydingus, that one is probably the one most people are more familiar with. It had made somewhat of a comeback a few years back in Korea.

Irrawaddy, good of you to think of Boney-M. I read that the guy who created Dchinghis Khan was inspired by Boney-M’s “Rasputin”.

Irrawaddy, enjoy…or maybe not.

“Hello Mr. Monkey,” the kiddies used to sing it to me as I passed them in the street. Two years ago I was at Kyoungju and a friggin’ 40-something ajumma started singing it to me. In the grotto.

And having nothing to do with Genghis Khan or Moscow, Baccara’s 1977 hit “Yes sir, I can boogie”. Disco Night w/ the salaryman. Powder blue suits, white socks, and size 6 shoes that made them 5 centimeters taller.

Looks like a German version of the Village People.

Dschinghis Khan came 4th in the 1979 Eurovision Song contest with the second linked song above.

Great memories of those wild disco nights in the King Club, Golden Wave, Sportsman Club, etc., They were huge in the early 80s in the ville.

Face the truth. Every old bastard on this list has fond memories of Boney M.

Irrawaddy, I would guess that we crossed paths in Anjeong-ni in 1978.

I don’t recall Steve’s Golden Wave Club in Itaewon. My hangout there was the Silver Waves Club (Ozzie Osbourne’s Crazy Train, Ted Nugent’s Great White Buffalo, etc.), probably one of the reasons for my high-noise exposure hearing loss. Still, I did occasionally swallow my pride and head over to the King Club to dance with the kindergarten teachers just like everybody else.

Mr. Monkey? Better not to even mention that song’s name lest we contribute to an evil resurrection.

“What did Uncle Genghis ever do to you?”

He put a blue spot on my kid’s ass, damn it!~

kpmsprtd:

I could be wrong about the name, time is having its affect on memory, but the Goldenwave played dance and pop music. It located about half way down fish alley and was upstairs on the east side.

I too would drop by the Silverwave every now and then to enjoy the wall-of-noise ambiance.
