No Borat for Moscow/’The Host’ in FT

Russian authorities have effectively banned “Borat: Cultural Learnings of America Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan,” making Sacha Baron Cohen’s film the first movie banned in Russia since the fall of communism.

Also on the film front, the FT reviewed Bong Jun-ho’s “The Host.” He seemed to like it, calling the film “glorious nonsense.”

“For progressive South Koreans, America and their own country are still handier demons than the monster to their north; although as a Kim-seeking secret weapon, to be sent up river or up canal-system to prang the world’s newest nuclear lunatic, this Host might well be worth developing.”

The folly of South Korea’s 386 politics is universally understood.

I went to see Borat in the cinema last night.

Its very well made. He didn’t use any clips from the TV show and it was hard to tell in many cases which gags were setups and which weren’t.

I feel sorry for the Kazakh people in Europe and the U.S. They should pretend to be Uzbek for the next few years and hope that there is no sequel.
