For members of a party that is not long for this Earth, the Uri boys and girls are certainly full of ideas (K Times) Their latest is to change the constitution so that:
- Presidents will serve a four-year term (like in the US).
- Presidents can stand for reelection one time (like in the US).
- National Assembly elections would be still be for four years and be concurrent with presidential terms (unlike in the US).
As a Republican (considering how things are looking right now in the States) not having midterm elections may seem pretty good, but I think they are an important check on Presidential power by giving the public a change to make a ‘mid-course correction.’ On the other hand you want to let the president have some coattails so that he push the agenda he was elected on.
To balance those two needs, National Assemblymen should either serve two-year terms or staggered four-year terms to that half of the seats are up in presidential election years and half are up in midterm elections.

Anyone find an irony in this like I do?

And correction is occuring as we speak.

Yeah. Normally, those are changes that politicians want when they actually have a chance of winning the next elections.
Anything in the proposal about simply investing all power in the leader who can shoot 6 holes-in-one in a single round of golf? I’m ready to vote for that one myself and I’m not even Korean.
Thanks to Public Law 109-364 and a few other rubber-stamped banana-republic-like powers, he now has all of the coattails he could ever need…
Zillions of candle lights will be demonstrating if Uri tries to change the constitution.
No irony there. I may not like the way things seem to be going in the mid-terms, but I still believe they are an important check on presidential (and majority) power. If the American public wants to throw us out, fine. We will lick our wounds and come back for another struggle in 2008.
I thought I had been pretty clear about that in the post (despite all the typos).
