In OhMyNews, Tim Savage writes about historical amnesia and the oversimplification of commentary regarding the state of the Korea-U.S. alliance. It’s a well-argued take on things from a perspective very different from what you’ll often find linked here. Here’s a taste:
One of the biggest bones of contention has been over the history of [...]

The JoongAng Ilbo reports that North Korea has asked British and Russian reinsurance companies to pay Pyongang reinsurance claims. In so doing, North Korea has released erstwhile unknown facts about several disasters that have taken place in the secretive nation.
There were four disasters mentioned:
The sinking of a Wonsan-Hamhung ferry in April that killed some [...]

Don’t have the votes? That’s OK, just seize the speaker’s chair!

A bit late, but funny nonetheless. On Sep. 14, a photographer caught Grand National Party lawmakers Han Sun-kyo (left), Lee Han-gu and Eom Ho-sung ogling online photos of professional pool star Jeanette Lee in the National Assembly.
This while parliamentary debate was stalled over President Roh’s nomination for Constitutional Court Justice.
Well, at least they weren’t sleeping.
UPDATE: [...]

DID YOU KNOW the Thai military has launched 19 coups since 1932?

Between the traditional Korean music festivals and preparations for the upcoming issue of SEOUL magazine, it’s been just a tad busy around Chez Marmot. As you can see, posting—at least from me—has been a bit slow, which is a shame, because there has been a ton of stuff to blog.
Regular posting to resume tonight. [...]

“Textbook revision? Oh no, not again!”
Fear not: this is not what it seems. Nothing to do with nationalistic reinterpretations of history, or pitched battles between countries, but rather updating South Korean social-curriculum (my term) textbooks to reflect changing realities. (Or perhaps, in a prescriptive, normative society such as Korea’s, to try to help change such [...]

This is one of the first reviews that scared me going into it. I have passed Thunder Burger on many occasions. Despite being opened in the past year or so, the dingy poorly done cheesy 50’s diner type décor always served as a warning flag to me. Determined not to judge a book by its [...]

…but the workers there are still getting ripped off and Seoul is still funding Pyongyang’s ”military first” habit.
Everyone’s favorite British sap visionary banker in Pyongyang must be a happy guy right now. He just avoided having a little competition (Yonhap):
North Korea sought to open an account with a South Korean bank at an inter-Korean industrial complex in its [...]

If you’re not going on Robert’s next grand expedition this weekend, the Royal Asiatic Society — Korea Branch is offering a half-day walking-tour of the “Bukchon” neighborhood of remaining Hanok (Korea’s traditional wooden/stone/tile houses) and fascinating small museums in northern central Seoul. This Saturday Sept 23, from 9:30 am to about one.
I will be the tour-guide, doin’ the best i can.
“The close proximity [...]

From the IHT on the recent Roh Bush Summit:
The Bush aides have acknowledged that the gap with the Roh government has grown so much in recent months - “as wide as the Sea of Japan,” one senior official said

The Korea Times’ headline piece (at least on their website) breaks the earth-shaking revelation that U.S. Ambassador Alexander Vershbow’s wife Lisa has apparently violated Korean law by peddling her costume jewelry at a gallery. Not having established a business here in Korea and obtained a taxpayer identification number, Lisa Vershbow is now an “illegal worker.” [...]

Nashville’s is about as close an institution as the expat community has. It’s been here for what seems like ages, and everyone at one time or another has at least tippled here. It also has a reputation for a decent burger.
However in my history of dining at the place that reputation has been spotty. I [...]

ROKon Magazine, the legitimate successor to the unmourned KScene, has been birthed for a third exciting time. Each issue, we creep ever closer to being a “real” magazine. Give us a few more months, and you won’t remember a time when you weren’t anxiously awaiting another mentally stimulating issue.
The issue came out Friday night and [...]

Kim Ji-hye of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign is conducting research on how the acquisition of the Korean language as one’s second language (or family language) is related to the knowledge of one’s native (or community) language. Read the material below, and if you satisfy the required conditions and are interested in participating, the [...]

Is Korean-American pool star Jeanette Lee the Robert Kim of the professional billiards world?
Sparkles of Psychedelic Kimchi seems to think so. Or at least I think he thinks so.

Sitting in a PC cafe in Jeonju, where I came down to help with our second Korean traditional music tour, this time to take in the opening of the Jeonju Sori Festival.
Things ran a great deal smoother than the first tour (to Chungju Lake), IMHO, and it seemed most of the participants enjoyed the music, [...]

Ieodo, the undersea rock about which China has denied Korean claims of sovereignty (see also Chosun Ilbo), apparently goes by the aliases of Socotra Rock and Suyan Rock as well.
And to think I didn’t know that.
BTW, the Great Ieodo Wikipedia War appears to have begun.
Oh, and the homepage of Okinawa Prefecture made the boo-boo of marking Tsushima [...]
