Well, here is a very strange email that I just received from our favorite North Korea human rights activist, Dr. Norbert Vollertsen. He certainly paints a dark picture.
Coming back from Thailand after taking care for arrested North Korean refugees and South Korean activists there here in downtown Seoul I was attacked by a street gang and knocked down in the middle of the road.
After other cars slowly passed by I was intentionally run over (the driver even stared at me out of his window - in order to make a better hit ?) by a taxi, the wheels precisely running over my left knee and foot.
Later I was accused by the police and some “eyewitnesses” (the guys who knocked me down ?) that I had been totally drunken, that I hab been lying there on the middle of the road (sleeping?) and that it was all my fault.
Of course I was not drunken, had to give a speech about North Korea that morning (and gave - standing on crunches…) and - wearing a cast - now suffer from a broken foot and ruptured ligaments, a knee distorsion and multiple haematoma.
I certainly hope he is feeling better soon. And that he gets someone to watch his back while he is in Korea. If he is in that much danger, he had better be careful.

Frankly, I wonder if this Vollertsen’s monomania is not symptomatic of a mental disorder that is now manifesting itself in paranoia and narcissistic tendencies.
I’m not going to speculate on the veracity of his claim. But he does manage to find himself in the most peculiar situations…
I still remember my first and only meeting with him - I believe it was after he was detained for a short time in Pusan. I was talking with him at the SFCC and suddenly in the middle of our talk he jumped up and said something like he couldn’t speak to me anymore ….and…..(mumble) (mumble)….they…. … and then he was gone. I remember looking at some of the other people there and asking them after Norbert literally raced out of the club - “was it something I said?”
No speculations…..ah hell…, I have lots of speculations but I will just keep them to myself.
I’m beginning to think he’s got some mental problems.
Trying to get South Koreans to acknowledge the plight of North Koreans would give anyone mental problems. I hope he’s alright.
Sounds like paranoid schizophrenia. If left untreated, It could mean danger to himself and/or others around him.
I suggest some take him to see a psychiatrist before he hurts himself any further.
I don’t think Dr. V told the whole story here. Apparently, he was on the Namsan Road that twists from the Hilton to the Hyatt and tried to stop those assholes who hotrod at 90mph. He was lying in the road because they had a go back at him. Then, allegedly, the taxi driver had a go at him. Dr. V may be our favorite activist, but he’s not a very good reporter. He should also pick his fights better.
While we’re on the subject of the good Dr, I’ve always had this bad feeling that something really bad will happen to him. It’s like he wants to provoke it.
