Most johns married men in 30s and 40s

by Robert Koehler on September 25, 2006

Also on the prostitution front, authorities in Jeollanam-do revealed that the biggest consumer of prostitution services are (probably) married men in their 30s and 40s, not unmarried men in their 20s as widely believed.

They noted that since the Special Law on Prostitution went into effect on Sep. 23, 2004, the number of sex shops and sex workers in the Gwangju/Jeollanam-do area has dropped greatly, but the number of prostitution-related offenses is going up.

Broken down by age group, 52.3 percent of the men busted for prostitution between Sep. 2003 and Sep. 2004 were in their 30s and 40s, an age group with a large percentage of married men. Men in their 20s and younger made up only 31.3 percent.

By profession, most were self-employed or office workers, indicating that consumers of such services were men of means with time to spare. Go figure.

Does this really surprise anyone? Where is it “widely believed” that most johns are young guys in thier 20s?

Older, married guys with money sounds like stereotypical consumers of prostitution to me, but I’m new here (and female).

Do you think the authorities are upset that the dragnet seems to be snagging a different population than they thought it would?

Guys in their 20′s are still able to get it for free!

And most of the girlies married and doing the bad things are over 40 and they don’t take the subway and they’re all sexy clothes and gigglings.

Why, the very same place it’s widely believed that the US-Korea Status of Forces Agreement is “unfair”, that kimchi prevents infections with SARS and AIDS and promotes healthfulness, and that the fan will murder you while you sleep!

I know. I was shocked, too.

It is not really accurate to compare a cohort that spans 20 years (30-49) with a cohort that spans at most 13 years (17-29, unless you think 12 year-olds may be getting some relief at the hands of a hooker). Year-for-year, the 20′s and younger seem to stack up just about even with their older brethren.

since you obviously are interested in prostitution and you’re over 30, can i ask how many times you have used a prsotitute in korea? i know, ‘never’, right?

yeah, right.

8 Brendon Carr September 25, 2006 at 5:57 pm

I told you, I am a prostitute in Korea.

But at least you are not a blogger. They are the lowest of the low.

Ouch.

Brendan, are most of your clients married men between in their 30′s and 40′s?

12 Haisan September 25, 2006 at 6:11 pm

> Ouch.

Ouch? I think that was more ironic than biting. Especially considering that I just posted on your blog a few minutes ago.

Still, even the lowest of the bloggers are a step up from the intellectual bukkake that is pawikirogi.

(I wonder if I flamed someone else? Color me uncreative.)

Should have read “I wonder if I should have flamed…”

usually for those people who are in their twienties are kinda broke. but for those more established and bored with their wives, then… yes… i can see that.

do they really think that to make prostitution illegal will make the streets any safer? whatever! the more you take things away from people, the more they’re gonna want it. come on… psych 101!

Guilty as charged.

BTW, your 누나 sends her regards, and said thanks for taking care of your folks in the land of the big PX. She said she’ll come join you soon.

“intellectual bukkake”

Love it.

‘intellectual bakkake…’

really? why? it’s a legitimate question. in fact, i’d like to ask all of the expats* here how many times they’ve used prostitutes in korea. lemme guess, none of ya, right? an expat using street walkers in asia? hell nooooooooo! do i got that right?

hey, now that marmot has done the 5000th article on korean whores going to merica, why not do one on how many johns the us sends to asia?

* i exclude dogbert from this question.

‘big px, big px, big px!’ whined dogbert

i wasn’t asking you if YOU used prostitutes in korea since the answer is readily available by just looking at your picture, kermit.

Many Korean azummas in their 30′s and 40′s don’t look sexy. They are not fhuggable.

Men need alternatives.

You do know that was a different guy, right? He spelled his family name Karr. I’ve never lived in Thailand and have only transitted through its airport three times (which smelled quite moldy each time when I was there).

A lot of middle-aged Korean men ain’t so hot, either, Baduk. Fortunately, Korean women have alternatives: host bars and foreign English teachers. :)

I’ve always been curious as to how common it is for Western men to use prostitutes. Several Western male friends/colleagues admitted to paying for sex in Asia but said they never went to a prostitute America.

23 railwaycharm September 27, 2006 at 4:06 pm

How many of the girls that hang on the GI’s arms do you think are in the relationship to get to know the person? I see the same girls with new guys after the troops rotate out…. What would you call that?

24 railwaycharm September 27, 2006 at 4:08 pm

Oh, and by the way…. the Seoul city government shut down all of the glass houses right? There is no possible way Seoul has prostitutes! It was on TV therefore scientifically proven.

And middle-aged white women have their dildo’s, turn lesbian, or start collecting cats. :)

I’m certain there’s a fair amount of Western guys who perhaps read a little too many James Clavell novels who go to Asia with certain ideas in mind. Which is pretty much the equal and opposite reason why many Western women go to…say…Jamaica.

27 Sonagi September 28, 2006 at 8:36 am

:) :) :) A bisexual female friend who started dating women in Korea liked to quip, “Living in Korea is enough to make a woman turn lesbian.”

28 Arghaeri September 28, 2006 at 1:21 pm

“Fortunately, Korean women have alternatives: host bars and foreign English teachers.”

I think many korean middle aged women are pretty hot, certainly the one I’m married to.
On that basis how exactly do I go about getting a job in one of these host bars?

This is not necessarily true.
