And this leads us to a tragic news from yesterday. According to KBS, police rounded up some 53 men in one rural village in Jeollanam-do on charges of procuring the sexual services of an underage girl working for a local “ticket tea house” (FUN FACT: when you run a search for “tea house” (dabang) on Naver.com, you need to fill out an adult verification).
The tea house dropped the young lass off at homes, nearby hotels and even greenhouses, where she apparently did more than just serve coffee.
Some 30 tea houses in the Gwangju/Jeollanam-do area have been busted for providing sexual services. This plague upon the region is no doubt the fault of the U.S. Patriot missile battery at Gwangju AB. I expect things will improve once the battery is moved back to Waegwan.

Several years ago, I actually disagreed in class with a Korean language teacher about the use of dabang in our textbook. She insisted that a dabang was just a traditional Korean alternative to a coffee shop and denied that there was any male entertainment going on. There is one region in central Korea that uses dashil instead of dabang.

Sonagi, the teacher was correct, and arguably it is the coffee shop that is the modern equivalent of the tabang (tea room).
When I first visited Korea I went to many tabangs with my wife (then fiancee) whilst touring around and they were all serving coffee and tea in comfortable surroundings at high prices, predominantly occupied by housewifes chatting for one or two hours over a coffee. I.e they were the equivalent of Starbucks now. However, whilst the same places are there now nowadays they all seem to have changed their names to coffee shops in the increasing trend to be fashionably western. A Kangnam Kongju wouldn’t be seen dead in a “quaint” old fashioned tabang.
No doubt some “tabangs” were fronts for more seedy activities even then, but I never saw it then, and have only seen it since in korean movies.
In any case thats saying no more than some bars, hair salons, or saunas are fronts for prostitution. It doesn’t mean that all bars, hair salons, saunas etc are knocking shops.
Unfortunately, because most of the tabang have changed their name to coffe shop, cafe or similar westernised names, it may well be that the “tabang” that remain in Seoui are predominately a front for other activities, but I have done the on the ground research to know either way.
All of this is arguably the very predictable result of Korea caving into to US habit of forcing its own moral judgments on other nations regardless of their ethnic and religious heritage, and whats even worse the american seem to preach it but not observe it in their own land.
This sermonising is beautifully demonstrated by the contract between US programming such as Baywatch objectivising the female form, against the AFN Networks wonderful advertisement against “sexual harassment” where the guy says something like “You’re looking good today” being put over as being crass harassment leading to possible mental anguish of the person receiving the compliment. On this basis I’m surprised that I can survive in the korean working environment when I am regularly “harassed” by both female and male staff, buttering up to their senior. Similarly, the pressure from the US on Germany because poor innocent american football fans might be corrupted by the licensed brothels near the world cup stadiums. (if they’re so innocent before they arrived how is it they’re the looking for and using the services on offer)
Forced prostitution, underage prostitution, and any other form of prostitution involving coercions should be “seriously” cracked down upon, rather than the “for show” raids on vice every few months, whilst the police station next door ignores it for the remaining 364 days a year, and simultaneously require the sex workers to have regular official health checks!!!
Consensual sex between adults should not be interfered with, and if the lady or man for that matter chooses to supplement their income in doing so, that surely their right as a grown adult.
The move of these services more and more underground is a totally predictable result of making prostitution illegal, and only serves to make the real problems of underage and coerced prostitution more difficult to identify and prevent, and increases the likelihood of serious health issues (AIDS) spreading further.

The clampdown in gwangju was a short lived thing to appease public indignation and to keep up the police image.
I used to visit a tabang that delivered to me in Gwangju. Made a friend out of a Korean coffee girl that worked there and delivered to me.
