Walking Tour of Bukchon in Seoul on Saturday

If you’re not going on Robert’s next grand expedition this weekend, the Royal Asiatic Society — Korea Branch is offering a half-day walking-tour of the “Bukchon” neighborhood of remaining Hanok (Korea’s traditional wooden/stone/tile houses) and fascinating small museums in northern central Seoul.  This Saturday Sept 23, from 9:30 am to about one.

I will be the tour-guide, doin’ the best i can.

“The close proximity to the palaces, the ideal geomantic location and the commanding view of Pugak-san and Inwang-san made the area a favourite residential area for high-ranking government officials and the nobility throughout the 600-year-old history of the capital Seoul.  Nowadays, the name Bukchon refers to a hanok conservation zone…” — and it’s controversial, as destruction/remodeling of the old ones outpaces any actual preservation — i’ll discuss those issues.

If you haven’t been to this fascinating little area, this is a good opportunity to get introduced to it — some great photos are possible.  Meet before 9:30 on the sidewalk at Exit #3 of the Anguk Metro Station (Orange Line #3).  Wear appropriate shoes!

It costs w10,000 for members, w12,000 for non-members — R.A.S. membership is very worthwhile if you’re at all interested in Korea.  For more info and to register, click on the words on that day the Event Calendar see our homepage.  Or call 763-9483 10~12 am or 2~5 pm,  or e-mail: raskb@kornet.net

Where exactly is Bukchon? You’re meeting at Anguk subway station, so is it somewhere east of Gyeongbokgung? Or south, near Insa-dong or west thereof?

It’s all the area in between Gyeongbok-gung and Changdeok-gung, north of the Anguk-dong Station. Used to include the area south of it (Insa-dong, Jongro-2-ga) to the Cheonggye-cheon Stream, but not anymore…

So, can one just show up and give you some cash or is there a secret handshake involved? I will try to come through this time since I wanted to see some of these places.

Either way — register & pay-in-advance is best, but
show-up-pay-cash will work fine. All the money that
is collected goes to support the RAS…
