Kim Ji-hye of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign is conducting research on how the acquisition of the Korean language as one’s second language (or family language) is related to the knowledge of one’s native (or community) language.  Read the material below, and if you satisfy the required conditions and are interested in participating, the contact information is all there.

한국어 설문조사 연구에 참가하실 분 (시간당 $10)

대상 (Participants): 아래 조건을 모두 만족하시는 분 - Group 1 과 Group 2는 많이 조건이 다릅니다. 참가자들은 어떤 그룹에 속하시던지간에 한그룹의 조건을 모두 만족시켜야 합니다.

Group 1

If you:

1. speak English as mother tongue
2. learned Korean after 10 years old
3. are at least intermediate level in Korean/or can understand the sentences such as below:

“철수는 영희에게 이번 겨울에는 자기자신이 꼭 교회주차장을 살 거라고 말했다고 나는 알고 있다.”

“영수는 학교가 자기자신이 제출했던 작품을 그다지 좋아하지 않는다고 생각한다.”

Group 2:

If you:

1. are Korean-American in a family where Korean is used 2. are born in English-speaking countries (U.S, UK, Canada, Austrailia, New Zealand etc.) or moved to the English-speaking countries before 3-years old
3. have not stayed in Korea more than 6 months for studying
4. are at least intermediate level in Korean/or can understand the sentences such as below:

“철수는 영희에게 이번 겨울에는 자기자신이 꼭 교회주차장을 살 거라고 말했다고 나는 알고 있다.”

“영수는 학교가 자기자신이 제출했던 작품을 그다지 좋아하지 않는다고 생각한다.”

초대의 글

안녕하세요?

저는 일리노이대학 어바나샴페인에서 언어학과 박사과정중에 있는 김지혜 (Ji-Hye Kim)라고 합니다.

제 박사논문은 한국어를 배우는 학습자(learner)들이 각각의 모국어(mother tongue)나 한국어에 노출된 시기 등의 다른 여건들과 관계하여 한국어 문장들을 해석하는데 어떠한 견해들을 가지고 있는지에 대해 조사하고 있습니다. 이 졸업논문 프로젝트는 제 지도교수님이신 Silvina Montrul (Department of Spanish, Italian and Portuguese), James Yoon (department of Linguistics) 교수님의 지도 하에 진행되고 있으며 National Science Foundation (NSF)의 장학금으로 재정적인 지지를 받고 있습니다.

이 논문프로젝트는 35페이지 분량의 설문지형식으로 된 문제지를 피실험자들이 완성한뒤 시간당 $10 상당의 참가비용을 지불받는 것 (보통 3-4시간가량이 걸립니다)을 원칙으로 하고 있으며, 필요한 참가자들은 두 그룹으로 구성되어 있습니다.

첫번째 그룹은 영어가 모국어이면서 한국어를 10세 이후에 배우기 시작한 순수한 외국인들을 대상으로 합니다.

두번째 그룹은 한국인 2세 교포로 영어권나라에서 태어나 가정에서는 한국어가 사용이 되어지지만 영어를 더 쉽게 구사하고 많이 쓰는 사람들을 대상으로 합니다. 단 교포이신 분들은 한국에서 6개월이상 공부하신 경험이 있으시면 참가 자격을 잃게 됩니다.

두 그룹 모두 한국어 실력이 보통 중급이나 그 이상이 되어야 참가하시는 데 어려움이 없으실 것으로 봅니다.

혹시 한국어 레벨을 잘 모르시는 분들은 아래문장들:

“철수는 영희에게 이번 겨울에는 자기자신이 꼭 교회주차장을 살 거라고 말했다고 나는 알고 있다.”

“영수는 학교가 자기자신이 제출했던 작품을 그다지 좋아하지 않는다고 생각한다.”

위 두문장 정도 수준의 문장들을 많이 대하게 되실 것이므로 위 두 문장과 같은 문장들의 대략적인 해석이 가능한 분들이면 참가하실 수 있다고 보면 됩니다..

참가하시기 위해서는 참가 동의서 (consent form) 에 서명(signature)을 하셔야 하고 설문지 완성/제출 후에는 이 실험에 참가하고 참가비를 지급받았다는 표목록 (table form) 에 서명을 해 주셔야 합니다.

참가하시는 분들은 실험자와 직접 이메일이나 구두를 통해 (전화) 동의를 하시고 어떤 방식으로 설문지를 배부받으시고 제출해 주실 것인지에 대해 의논을 한 뒤 설문지를 받으신지 되도록 2주안으로 설문지를 완성하여 제출해 주실것을 기대하고 있습니다.

보통 설문지는 참가자의 work/home address로 mail로 발송되며 참가자가 설문지를 다 완성하신 후에 함께 발송된 self-stamped envelope을 이용하여 실험자의 주소로 다시 보내주시면 됩니다. 자세한 내용은 실험자와 e-mail이나 phone call을 통해 정보를 제공받으실 수 있습니다.

실험 참가기간은 8월 20일 이후부터 12월 10일까지로 잠정적으로 정합니다.

Participating Korean Survey (Dissertation Project)

Investigator: Ji-Hye Kim, Department of Linguistics, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

You are invited to participate in a dissertation research project investigating whether and how the acquisition of the Korean language as one’s second language (or family language) is related to the knowledge of one’s native (or community) language. This study is being conducted by Ji-Hye Kim, under the supervision/direction of Prof. Silvina Montrul and Prof. James H-S Yoon of the Department of Linguistics at the University of Ilinois, Urbana-Champaign.

If you agree to participate in this study, you will first complete an information questionnaire about your language background and take a short Korean proficiency test. The main task consists of a set of truth value judgment task, and another set of grammaticality judgment task combined with a written interpretation task. The main tasks can be done on two separate occasions and at a place that is convenient for you. It will take approximately 60-90 minutes to complete each part of the two main tasks.

Your participation in this study is strictly voluntary. There are no risks or discomforts that can be expected as a result of your participation. Your decision to decline or to withdraw at any time will be respected. Your decision to participate, decline, or withdraw from participation will have no effect on your grades at, status at, or future relations with your school or with the University of Illinois. You will be paid $10 per hour, if you complete the tasks on each occasion. If it takes less than an hour for you to complete the given task, you will still be paid $10 per task. If you withdraw in the middle of the tasks, your participation will be compensated at the rate of $7 per hour. (However, if you did not even complete the half (the first session of the experiment), you cannot receive the remuneration.) This study is independent of any Korean language course you might be taking.

The data from your participation in this study will be treated with confidentiality. Your name will be replaced with a number for the analysis of the data and only the researcher will have access to your personal information. In addition, the tests will be destroyed after the data analysis is completed. Your name will never be used in any publication based on this research. While there are no direct benefits to you, your response will help us understand how the knowledge of one’s native language is related to the acquisition of other languages.

You are encouraged to ask any questions that you might have about this study before, during and after your participation in the experiment. However, answers that could influence the results of the experiment will be delayed to the end of the experiment. Above is the copy of consent form I am using for the experiment. It has taken usually 3-4 hours for overall participants to complete all the parts. However, if you have to spend some more time, the extra hours will be paid by the same rate ($10 per hour). To participate the Korean task, you have to sign on the consent form (first page of the task) and also have to sign on another form (saying that you have participated and have been paid) after your task is received by Ji-Hye Kim.
