Well, at least the template is functional

There seemed to be a problem with my old template that was leading to a ton of CPU overload errors. Anyway, I’ve switched to this one (Sandbox, by Scott Allan Wallick), which is actually quite beautiful in a minimalist sort of way.

I think I caught you a few days ago messing around with templates, too: there were two new ones in the space of a few minutes.

I’m posting a comment in the current template, using IE 6 on Windows XP, and the edit box is overlapping with the list of recent comments and authors. The font I’m writing in looks like about 12-point Courier New, which seems to big, so maybe it’s some kind of font-size issue that’s expanding the box.

After posting, the comment looks okay.

Didn’t someone (not me) write a few months back that there are two things the Marmot’s Hole can be relied upon?

    1. A non-stop flamefest; and
    2. The Marmot constantly experimenting with templates!

  3. Posted August 30, 2006 at 1:08 am | Permalink

To be honest, the current template looks a little too plain. I understand your desire for simplicity, etc., but this just looks like mid-90s-vintage plain HTML. It’s so last century!

    Ah, now I see:

The Sandbox theme isn’t rendering properly in my browser at all. I’m seeing plain formatting in lieu of the Sandbox template I should be seeing. I know someone will come along and say I should buy a Mac or switch to Firefox (*cough*…dda…*cough*), but….

  5. Posted August 30, 2006 at 2:22 am | Permalink

actually, i’m not seeing anything resembling a sandbox theme either….just the stark html look, and i have firefox.

    The blog burped again?

This new format will take some getting used to.

I’m just glad it hasnt crashed altogether.

Where would we be without our daily Marmot?

Ah, after looking closely at the Sandbox sample screenshots (http://www.flickr.com/photos/scottwallick/sets/72157594196151410/show/ , especially the 7th thumbnail from the left), it looks like this plain look is what it’s supposed to look like.

Please, Robert, choose a new theme, or dig up an old one! This is just too plain! It’s not befitting of the great K-blogging portal known as the Marmot’s Hole! My eyes hurt reading it!

I’m going to be playing with it over the next couple of days. I know it’s a bit stark at the moment, but it’s nice having a plain base upon which to work. Anyway, it’s very functional, the code is clean and it’s a lot less taxing on the cpu—I hope.

By the way, I’ll be adding the avatars shortly.

Robert, the new template sucks. Sorry to say it.

Bear with me for a bit—the template will look a lot better in a couple of days.

I should have added a third axiom to comment #2.

There are three things the Marmots Hole can be relied upon:

    1. A non-stop flamefest;
    2. The Marmot constantly experimenting with templates; and
    3. The Marmot Colony(TM) complaining about said templates!

Anyhow, despite griping about the site’s current appearance, I appreciate all the work you put into this blog.

Good thing you have a tough skin to endure all the wailing and gnashing of teeth you have to endure from the likes of us, your commenters!

It looks a bit better now that the gravatars are working…but the edit box is still overlapping with the blogroll.

  16. Posted August 30, 2006 at 9:33 am | Permalink

(When you click to edit in it. Upon page reloading, the comment box is correctly proportioned.)

Sorry for this endless stream of comments; just trying to offer some useful feedback…although you can probably see everything just the same on your side, too.

  17. Posted August 30, 2006 at 9:34 am | Permalink

Could you send me a screenshot of the edit box? Seems fine with Firefox/IE for the PC.

Just disabled Gravatars until I have more time to style them.

The nice thing with this template is the semantically, it’s beautiful, and changing the styling is just a matter of CSS. So like I said, it will start looking nicer pretty soon.

No, thanks for all the comments, Sewing. I need all the feedback I can get.

Robert, I sent you a note via the comment form on your “About” page.

…By the way, that “This Account Has Exceeded Its CPU Quota” page is still coming up periodically (about the same rate as before)…but maybe that’s just because you’re tinkering with the blog.

  21. Posted August 30, 2006 at 9:58 am | Permalink

Might be one of the scripts, too. Not sure which one it could be, though.

Actually, have you checked with your host? It may not be a template issue.

I use Bluehost they sent out an email yesterday explaining that some large sites were seeing CPU overload errors, and that it was a hosting problem that they were trying to correct.

  23. Posted August 30, 2006 at 2:26 pm | Permalink

Robert, I agree with Cat. There are a number of bluehost hosted sites with the CPU usage problem. I dont think its your fault.

“This Account Has Exceeded Its CPU Quota”

Not as frequent as before, from my end here. Only got this one once (today, that is).

Nice layout, Robert. Would be nicer if you could have that WYTIWYG feature like the one in Nomad’s blog. Not really necessary, just a suggestion. =)

We had the CPU quota issue with TKL hosted on LunarPages.

In the process of moving to Bluehost, I discovered that a plug-in had increased the SQL DB size to over 100 mb, which was queried each time a post was viewed (and googlebot was basically spamming us at the same time.

The WP-Cache program and reducing the DB size was the cure, although we’d already left LunarPages.

This latest iteration looks okay: sans-serif font, Taegeuk in the background…but the comment box still expands when I start typing in in it. At a resolution of 1024 x 768, it’s still overlapping with the blogroll, although at a higher (? 11xx x whatever) resolution, it doesn’t overlap.

It’s weird…I don’t know if it’s something specified in the CSS? It would appear to expand because the box is defaulting to 12-point Courier—or something similar—for text entry, thus forcing the box to expand to accomodate the necessary line width.

I tried changing the default fonts on my side to see if it would make a difference, but no such luck. It’s not a big issue in and of itself, but it is minorly distracting, and may be symptomatic of bigger issues.
