Teach English to NK defectors (nevermind)

UPDATE:  Oops.  The English teaching thing is for LiNK members only.  My bad.
Of course, you can always join LiNK and volunteer for one of their projects.  In any case, they now have all the volunteers they need for the time being.  I am deleting the original post.

Well, this isn’t good news for The Hub

A Gallup Korea poll revealed that four in five foreign executives of multinational in Korea wouldn’t consider setting up regional headquarters in the country, with the labor environment topping the list of concerns.

Well, at least he didn’t have any frozen babies in his fridge…

A 33-year-old Korean-American was busted for selling pot that he grew in an indoor greenhouse he built in the basement of his home in suddenly scandalous Bangbae-dong, Seocho-gu, Seoul.
The man, identified by his family name of Choe, is accused of producing some 130g of the weed (market value: 20 million won), some of which he [...]

Here’s a ‘Host’ for you

You know, I’m looking as foward to seeing Bong Joon-ho’s “The Host” as the next guy, but reading all the pre-release mumbo-jumbo about this being such a ground-breaking film, I couldn’t help but thinking that even if we were to acknowledge that it represents Korea’s first real “monster movie,” in the end, it’s a movie [...]

Snuppies, mammoths and tigers, oh my!

OK, Prof. Hwang Woo-suk is now claiming that he tried to clone a Korean tiger and a woolly mammoth.
In court to account for some 5 billion of 21 billion won in research funds (managed in a fake-name account), Hwang said he was unable to say where the money went, but that some of it may [...]

U.S. troops to stay for the long haul?

With a couple of bloggers (and one regular Korea Times columnist) pointing out signs that America will no longer write South Korea a blank security cheque, a high-ranking Defense Ministry official told Yonhap today that the “Future Alliance Vision” to be announced at the 38th annual Security Consultative Meeting this October will include a line [...]

Screw Disneyland… I’m going to Dokdo!

This year’s Miss Korea contestants visited Dokdo (that’s Takeshima for all you “evil” bloggers out there) on Sunday, where they cheered on the troops (maritime police, actually) and posed with Dokdo “resident” Kim Seong-do (66).

For some odd reason, I feel a snarky comment by a Japanese politician is in the works…

Who said the Korean media is out of touch with world trends?

Nice to see the Kyunghyang Shinmun’s editorial cartoonist apparently has his finger on the pulse of Middle Eastern cartooning. That or he just reads The Guardian:

I’m shocked, I tell ya! Shocked!

The Korean Teachers Union? Quoting North Korean history textbooks? Tell me it ain’t so!

Music break

Goose steppin‘ in the Workers’ Paradise (HT to Japundit).
But if you want real music, Antti links to two—count ‘em, TWO—videos (here’s one, here’s the other) of live performances by late singer/songwriter Kim Gwang-seok, an artist the likes of whom we’ll never, ever again see.
Antti was kind enough to link to some other Kim Gwang-seok videos [...]

Amateur hour in the ROK

You know, Foreign Minister Ban Ki-moon has to be the happiest man in the world today.
First, he comes out on top of a straw poll of candidates for the next UN secretary-general.
Then he gets a reminder of why no matter how difficult the UN job might prove, it can’t be as tough as trying to [...]

SEOUL August issue is OUT

The August edition of SEOUL magazine has hit the stands, so dig deep into those wallets and pick up a copy.
This issue, coincidentally, marks the magazine’s third year of existence.  So as an added bonus, we’ve included a rather nice pull-out with a pen drawing of Seoul Fortress by the incomparable Kim Yeong-taek and a [...]

IKK Fantasy Football reminder

After one day of recruiting, we have three players for the Insular Korean Kluster Football League.  We still need at least five (ideally nine) more for the league.
The teams so far are the Ansan Flying Yangbans, the Pusan Power Outage and Team Name (I hope that last one is just a working title until he [...]

By-elections tomorrow; will Democrats break out of Fortress Jeolla?

As the “politics guy” here at the Hole, I guess I would be remiss if I did not remind readers that we have yet another set of by-elections tomorrow.
As the Korea Times’ Lee Jin-woo* reports, the GNP is looking for another sweep.
Polls predicted another sweeping victory for the main opposition Grand National Party (GNP) in [...]

White teenage girl seen entering French home: witness

In connection to the mysterious (and tragic) “dead newborns in the French fridge” story, police now say a neighbor witnessed a white teenage girl leaving and entering the house where the bodies were discovered, reports YTN.
The witness said the girl appeared to be between the ages of 13 and 15 and 160-165cm in height.
The neighbor [...]

I’d Juche That For A Dollar . . .

It is always interesting how one can justify almost anything one does, regardless of how unethical or dubious it may be. This seems to be the unsavory side of human nature. This also seems to be a leading principle of Juche as practiced by North Korea in its counterfeiting operations. Per one Criminal [...]

Old British map shows Gando was Korean territory

A 23-year-old stamp collector released on Sunday two maps—one black and white and one color—that not only indicated that Gando was part of Joseon Korea, but also marked the East Sea as the “Sea of Korea.”
The B&W and color maps were versions of the same map, the “Modern Map and Chart: Asian Map” produced by [...]

Asian ‘Helsinki Accords’ bad idea: Unification Minister

Unification Minister Lee Jong-seok is feeling particularly talkative.
Yesterday, of course, he noted how the United States had “failed the most” when the North Koreans test launched their missiles.
Well, speaking before the National Assembly’s committee on unification, diplomacy and trade, Lee said he didn’t believe his comments would cause diplomatic friction with Washington. This was [...]

Two dead infants discovered at Frenchman’s home—UPDATED

The bodies of two infant boys were discovered in the deep freezer of a French-owned villa in Seorae Village of Seoul’s Banpo-dong.
This whole thing looks very, very weird.
According to police, a 40-year-old Frenchman who lives in the area, identified only as Mr. C, discovered the bodies on Sunday morning, after which he informed local police [...]

Brainysmurf lives!!!

Just found out Adam, formerly of Brainysmurf, still has a blog going at Mister Morris.
Brainysmurf was one of my favorite China-based blogs, so it’s good to see the man behind it is still cranking out material.
