Is anyone really surprised that the North Korean women’s football team would turn violent (supposedly a video linked, but not working on my computer) after a call went against them? After all, if it’s good enough for the men’s side…
Well, on a positive note, the incidents took place against Iran and China, respectively. Which means, of course, that with their propensity to bitch, cry and scream bloody murder at their allies, the North Koreans are showing that even after 50 years of national division, Koreans are still one people.

since there is so much talk of one nation, homogenous people and reunification
it makes sense that they all are poor sports

I think it was quite telling–and not surprising–that the female announcer prefaced the whole thing by saying that the North Korean players were understandably upset.
The main difference is that none of the SK men’s team members tried to actually strike the referee in that match.
On a side note — someone should check those ladies for steroid use, judging from their looks.

More seriouly though I will not be in the least bit surprised if these demure young things from the DPRK end up chipping lime in a gulag somewhere when they step off the long boat back home. After all the recent political goings on and China’s sanctioning of NK can you imagine the pressure these grls would have had to win ? Losing makes dear leader cry.
I actually feel kinda sorry for these girls - austracised from the footballing community for thuggery and total lack of sportsmanship - generally out of the world loop by virtue of their being norks - and to top it all off many will probably die in a forced labour camp in the not too distant future (which they will undoubtedly ‘volunteer’ to interm themselves in to get a bit of juche spirit back)… unfortunately the first of those is about the only thing any of them could have changed.

If I may refer to the precedent of the 1988 Olympics again: the S.Korean coach who roughed up the referee was feted as a hero - and by some of the same newspapers that castigated NBC for broadcasting the fracas to American viewers. So I wouldn’t take it for granted that Kim Jong Il is going to punish anyone. It is much worse (as NK’s 1968 World Cup team found out)to be accused of getting too friendly with foreigners.
Either that, or a male genitalia test.

A player attacking a ref and throwing stuff into the crowd definitely warrants any attention it may get in the sports media.

Hey, I resent that… I don’t follow baseball simply because I have better things to do than watch the Most Boring Sport on Earth ™. Some women’s basketball game and for whatever reason when the Taiwanese team was celebrating, one of the players for the Korean team got a quick cheap shot in as walking away, so then the Taiwanese player took her on shot at the Korean player, and the Korean player started kicking.
There’s not one single fan in the stands.

Also it should be noted that this particular video from Japanese news wasn’t really from like a ‘news show’ like you’d see in America for example. During the day there is constantly news shows on many channels that are like a mix between a news show and a talk show + the Daily Show. This was most likely covered by the major news outlets as well, but this clip wasn’t from 20/20, 60 minutes, or anything like that.
Heck, they even have news shows where they just read the newspaper to you!
