Cat fight!!!

by Robert Koehler on July 28, 2006

UPDATE: Here’s the video, courtesy my brother:

Is anyone really surprised that the North Korean women’s football team would turn violent (supposedly a video linked, but not working on my computer) after a call went against them? After all, if it’s good enough for the men’s side

Well, on a positive note, the incidents took place against Iran and China, respectively. Which means, of course, that with their propensity to bitch, cry and scream bloody murder at their allies, the North Koreans are showing that even after 50 years of national division, Koreans are still one people.

And tell me if this looks familiar:

I keep telling you people, nobody understands this stupid offside crap:

Trouble erupted deep in stoppage time at Hindmarsh Stadium when North Korean players thought they had equalised against China, but the goal was disallowed for an offside infringement.

What? A North Korean woman crying and throwing a tantrum? When a rain-soaked banner showing a picture of KJI isn’t involved? Perish the thought.

3 Pyotr July 28, 2006 at 7:47 pm

Can anyone get the video to work at:

http://foxsports.news.com.au/story/0,8659,19939215-23210,00.html# ?

If you have any luck (and it’s worth the watch), could you put it up at youtube please? Can’t seem to get it here.

4 Pyotr July 28, 2006 at 7:48 pm

Oops, just read your post a little more slowly and saw that you, too had trouble with the vid.

‘Scuse me.

5 montclaire July 28, 2006 at 8:17 pm

One could write a long history of Korean sports tantrums. But this is yet another area where the North will never catch up to the South. Remember the security officials getting into the ring to beat up the NZ ref back in the Seoul Olympics? Now that’s what I call Juche.

Totally off-topic, but:
http://www.marmotburrow.ucla.edu/

Saw it on metafilter…now back to our regularly scheduled football dyke tantrum…

Well, when winning a soccer game might keep you out of a gulog, you take it pretty serious I guess. As far as the 2 Qorea’s similar “sportsmanship”, 5,000 years of inbreeding can’t be undone in 50 years.

9 Pyotr July 29, 2006 at 12:39 am

That vid link didn’t work for me, but at the end of this short news report is a bit about kickin the ref:

On my browser (IE6 on Windows XP), some links break the page and some don’t. There’s a long greyspace (about 2 screens high) in the middle of the link in comment #7, but the links in the other comments don’t break the page like that. Anyone else have this problem? Is it WordPress or my browser?

this is definitely a resemblence of the SK men’s team surrounding the referee against Switzerland

since there is so much talk of one nation, homogenous people and reunification
it makes sense that they all are poor sports

it was offsides if you watch the video

13 Won Joon Choe July 29, 2006 at 8:01 am

I think it was quite telling–and not surprising–that the female announcer prefaced the whole thing by saying that the North Korean players were understandably upset.

14 Zonath July 29, 2006 at 8:18 am

this is definitely a resemblence of the SK men’s team surrounding the referee against Switzerland

The main difference is that none of the SK men’s team members tried to actually strike the referee in that match.

On a side note — someone should check those ladies for steroid use, judging from their looks.

15 Won Joon Choe July 29, 2006 at 8:24 am

Zonath,

The North Korean team certainly shatters the “nam-nam buk-nyuh” myth!

Yikes.

16 Hojuin July 29, 2006 at 8:48 am

Ref was kinda hot, Nork goalie could probably get a start in the Wallaby forward pack for tonight (god knows we could probably use her).

More seriouly though I will not be in the least bit surprised if these demure young things from the DPRK end up chipping lime in a gulag somewhere when they step off the long boat back home. After all the recent political goings on and China’s sanctioning of NK can you imagine the pressure these grls would have had to win ? Losing makes dear leader cry.

I actually feel kinda sorry for these girls – austracised from the footballing community for thuggery and total lack of sportsmanship – generally out of the world loop by virtue of their being norks – and to top it all off many will probably die in a forced labour camp in the not too distant future (which they will undoubtedly ‘volunteer’ to interm themselves in to get a bit of juche spirit back)… unfortunately the first of those is about the only thing any of them could have changed.

peace.

McNut: A Korean ball is always onside.

18 Zonath July 29, 2006 at 10:28 am

A Korean ball is always onside.

The ball may have been onside, but the player was offside. ;)

19 montclaire July 29, 2006 at 10:33 am

The number on her jersey is rather ironic, eh?

20 Won Joon Choe July 29, 2006 at 12:05 pm

Montclaire,

A great observation! I missed it, ROFL.

21 Won Joon Choe July 29, 2006 at 12:08 pm

So the big question for me is:

What will happen to our 18 beon?

Will she castigated for embarrassing the North Koreans on international stage? Or will she be praised for showing dem Koguryo fighting spirit?

22 Wedge July 29, 2006 at 1:57 pm

That goalie needs a testosterone test. Holy East German women’s swimming team, Batman.

I like how the Japanese picked this up (in the You Tube vid). Jap media thrives on Stupid Korean Tricks(tm).

Montclair: Good one.

23 montclaire July 29, 2006 at 3:26 pm

If I may refer to the precedent of the 1988 Olympics again: the S.Korean coach who roughed up the referee was feted as a hero – and by some of the same newspapers that castigated NBC for broadcasting the fracas to American viewers. So I wouldn’t take it for granted that Kim Jong Il is going to punish anyone. It is much worse (as NK’s 1968 World Cup team found out)to be accused of getting too friendly with foreigners.

24 Zonath July 29, 2006 at 6:39 pm

That goalie needs a testosterone test. Holy East German women’s swimming team, Batman.

Either that, or a male genitalia test.

Strangely enough, the KCNA doesn’t have an article on this one yet. I would have expected them to call for the Italian referee to respect the Korean people’s continued desire for reunification under the Dear Leader Kim Jong-Il by allowing the goal.

25 joshua July 30, 2006 at 12:38 am

Two words: roid rage.

“I like how the Japanese picked this up (in the You Tube vid). Jap media thrives on Stupid Korean Tricks(tm).”

I don’t really think that’s fair criticism now. It’s not like others aren’t reporting as well. If anything I think it’s interesting how you only have complains about Japan on this one.

et cetera, et cetera, et cetera…

A player attacking a ref and throwing stuff into the crowd definitely warrants any attention it may get in the sports media.

Perhaps another case of anything from Japan not praising something from Korea being taboo?

27 wjk July 30, 2006 at 5:33 am

It seems Koreans are indeed one people. Koreans kick when they’re extremely angry. Chan Ho Park against Tim Belcher, Dodgers vs Angels.

If you’re American, and you’re saying Tim who?… you’re not American, because obviously you don’t follow baseball. Baseball, apple pie, etc.

Kicking is considered to be a extra malicious attack in the west. Punching is more orderly. Koreans don’t react that way, though. They’ll kick.

28 Zonath July 30, 2006 at 9:01 am

If you’re American, and you’re saying Tim who?… you’re not American, because obviously you don’t follow baseball. Baseball, apple pie, etc.

Hey, I resent that… I don’t follow baseball simply because I have better things to do than watch the Most Boring Sport on Earth ™. Really, whoever said that soccer was unpopular in America because we like games with a lot of action and high scores has obviously never watched American popular sports. Baseball, football, golf… all incredibly slow sports.

29 Darin July 30, 2006 at 10:14 am

Tim who?

Anyways, I can think of more ‘evidence’ to back your theory that Koreans will kick when they get angry.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X1rf3sY0uD8&search=韓国 台湾

Some women’s basketball game and for whatever reason when the Taiwanese team was celebrating, one of the players for the Korean team got a quick cheap shot in as walking away, so then the Taiwanese player took her on shot at the Korean player, and the Korean player started kicking.

I’m not criticizing the Japanese at all. I really DO like how they show Koreans going apeshit.

32 JiMong July 30, 2006 at 5:36 pm

So. NK Women’s football players amused all of you piss-off Expats and a Japanophile out there, eh?

33 JiMong July 30, 2006 at 5:42 pm

WOW

34 railwaycharm July 30, 2006 at 6:07 pm

The Bitch should be jailed! Like a willful little child. Typical behavior. See you next Tuesday

35 Darin July 30, 2006 at 9:16 pm

”I’m not criticizing the Japanese at all. I really DO like how they show Koreans going apeshit.”

My mistake.

Also it should be noted that this particular video from Japanese news wasn’t really from like a ‘news show’ like you’d see in America for example. During the day there is constantly news shows on many channels that are like a mix between a news show and a talk show + the Daily Show. This was most likely covered by the major news outlets as well, but this clip wasn’t from 20/20, 60 minutes, or anything like that.

Heck, they even have news shows where they just read the newspaper to you!

What, are you displeased with this post, Mr. ‘I hate expats’ Korean in Canada? 너는 열등감이 있는 것 같네요. 캐나다인은 너 같은 인종차별 주의자가 있으면 기쁘다고 생각해? 조속히 자국에 돌아가라.

37 railwaycharm July 31, 2006 at 9:28 am

I was not amused. I was embarrassed for Korea. Every time you guys fuck-up I loose credibility for defending you.

38 dda August 1, 2006 at 12:49 am

If you think baseball is not only boring [indeed], but the Most Boring Sport, go watch cricket. Or badminton. :-)

39 Won Joon Choe August 1, 2006 at 12:58 am

Railwaycharm,

While I am no stranger to criticizing South Korean politics and culture, I think conflating North Korean and South Korean behavior in this case is unfair.

40 Sugar Shin August 1, 2006 at 4:10 am

So. NK Women’s football players amused all of you piss-off Expats and a Japanophile out there, eh? JiMong

Hm, guess, they have nothing better to do. And that’s the only thing they’re actually really good at. Being white pricks. Or a frickin’ uncle banana. Which is more worse than anything else.

41 Sugar Shin August 1, 2006 at 4:14 am

Oh, I forgot that lil’ Australian Waenom. Go fuck yourself, wanker.

42 bluejives August 1, 2006 at 4:42 am

Granted the North Koreans arent the most adept in international public relations, but poor sportsmanship is hardly a monopoly of us inbreed, homogenized mongoloids.
