Old-fashioned? I wasn't surprised after I saw the reporter's email address.

Compuserve?! Wow. I was down with the Compuserve email address back when AOL was #3 in the Internet services game (1993), but dang – she sure is holding on, ain't she?

Cheap Shot! You've been studing at the OMN/Hanky school of journalism again. US policy is to encourage other countries to crack down on trafficking, i.e. coerced prostitution. There is a plausible argument to be made that legalized prostitution encourages trafficking, so the Ambassador's making the connection shouldn't be a surprise. But that's just jawboning, and it's irresponsible and misleading to characterize US policy as going beyond enforcing anti-trafficking measures.

it's not that simple. i think the government is more concerned with the human trafficking end of the spectrum than they are with the legal dutch-type brothels. the two aren't always easily separated, and eastern europe in particular has become a haven for forced prostitution. former soviet-bloc countries with struggling economies are picked clean of young women, often against their will, and herded west to service germans, french, brits, italians, and the rest of the well-off half of the continent.

fanatical, puritanical, religion-based moralizing about prostitution: baaaaaaad.

humanity-based efforts to curb a very real worldwide modern-day slavery and trafficking problem: gooooooood.
